how to down grade a bios

Need a whole load more info to answer that mate.

But in general, if you have a mobo that's failing to flash the bios cos it says the one you have already is newer, there would be a "flag" like '-force' or similar for the comandline tool that will ignore your current bios and just flash anyway.

You'd need to be more specific on the mobo and method tbh.

Try downloading the older BIOS file from ASUS's website, un-zip that file, run the ASUS update utility, select update BIOS from file option, select the un-zip'd file and it'll install it.

I've updated BIOS like that

This is what I've had to do before for people and haven't had any problems. (Using a DOS boot disk)

Most other utilities seem to error when trying to downgrade BIOS
 
i ran asus update utility today, used the internet option and it didn't find the latest file wich is available in my motherboards download section. it found 3 versions so you might get a downgrade BIOS in the internet option
 
You should be able to make a bootable usb stick (google bootable dos usb windows 7), follow the instructions. Then download the bios from the mobo manu's website, it will be called xxxx.bin, where xxxx is a filename. Make sure this is the file and not a zipped version. Copy this on to the usb stick. Then google awdflash.exe, download that from a reputable source. Copy that onto the usb stick too.

Then turn your computer off, boot it, hit whatever key you need to to get it to boot the flash drive. When the MS dos screen comes up, type X:/ where X is the drive letter e.g. B or C. Now type awdflash.exe and hit enter. AWDFLASH.exe will run, and will ask you what bios you want to run. Type the file name of the bios and hit enter. Hopefully it should now go "validating" or something like that. Follow the instructions and let it flash the bios.

Don't power off the mobo during this procedure or you will wreck it.

Job done.
 
This link is for the CROSSHAIR 4 FORMULA page on ASUS's website. Click it, navigate to downloads section, BIOS and choose the file you want and download it, unzip it then run ASUS BIOS update utility and select update BIOS from file option to install the un-zip'd file

I reset BIOS to default settings before changin BIOS version for safety

You can/should use the other ASUS downloads for chip-set drivers, ethernet drivers etc and you might find newer drivers for some stuff like CREATIVE sound card at the manufacturers website

If your PC is overclocked you could write down the overclock settings before changing BIOS because I think overclock profiles will be deleted
