how i should go about my storage arrangements

Hi all i'm having a hard time deciding on how i should go about my storage arrangements as i feel i need at least 360GB of storage inculding the os in this total (60 + 300) and i only have £160 so should i just go for a 1TB hdd (£90) with a 128GB ssd (£80) which i'll use as a cache drive or should i go for one 256GB ssd (£152) and get another ssd later on, Many thanks in advance for your help

i have my storage set out like this:
  • 1x 64GB SSD for OS(s)
  • 1x 64GB SSD for virtual drive (swap file); temp directories; updates; games; and junk-space
  • 4x 2TB WD caviar blacks in RAID0 for mass storage

i would go for.... 128GB SSD + 2TB storage (HDDs are cheap as chips)

GO for the SSD for your OS and get the 1TB as storage. There are guids online that will show you how to configure the SSD and HDD to work seemlessly together.

If you opt for using the 120GB as a cache drive bear in mind I believe you are limited to using 60GB as cache.

Are you sure that you couldn't run the SSD normally and store just games and other media on the HDD?

I know in my case at least, so long as I keep games on a separate drive, I could run everything happily on a small-medium sized SSD.

You are right about there being a limit of 64GB if you use intel smart response (intel chipset) however if you use the asus ssd caching (marvell chipset) then there is no limit, i think i will have to look in to using the ssd for the os

You got 8TB worth of hard-drives in raid0???

What about data security in case if one of the 4 HDDs fails???

I have a 128GB SSD as an OS drive and a 1TB HDD for data. Works well and faster than a cache drive on an HDD (I had that previously).

I would buy a 2TB storage drive (as you can for £90) and hold out on buying an ssd if you can, they are tumbling down in price at the moment and I reckon they will continue to do so, but if you can't wait, get the 128GB SSD for O/S.

side note: RAID 0 storage, braver souls than me.
