how hot is to hot

to keep it alive for the duration of the manufacturesrs warrantly keep it under 70 personally 55 is my limit and IMO should be yours too -- get a better cooler / Thermal compound / both improve your cooling -- if that machine is overclocked & running @ 57 it may be eventually screwed that temp will also decrease your stability
 
Well, the thermal 'threshold' for AMD Athlon XP's with the Barton core is ~85ºC, which is much higher than 57ºC. You should be fine, and it shouldn't decrease the life of your processor at all. If it gets in the mid sixties, then you should crank the fan's.
