yeah next year is 12/16 piledriver cores, which will be some seruis power and heat. then it's likely that is as far as it will go then steam will be on FM2+ which will be AMD main socket.

Yeah that's pretty much what I've been seeing, along with the unavoidable occasional speculation of a new platform being unveiled or changing. Essentially though, if I wait for Steamroller to build a new computer, then I'll have no upgrade path at all save for changing the platform, whereas if I put a PD rig together now/coming weeks, I can always just drop in a Steamroller at a later date. I hope!

well next year is 12/16 core piledriver which will likely be the last CPU for am3+ but still thats a massive jump from 8 to 12/16 cores! assuming the motherboards now can handle that amount of power draw.

That's what's throwing me off at the minute, afaik Steamroller was earmarked as the last AM3+ CPU
and I can't for the life of me imagine what an average desktop user or gamer would need 12/16 cores for.

Get a 8350/20 now then and see if you can upgrade in the future. It would expect newer motherboards to come along with Steamroller just to keep in mind.

There is that I guess, but there's not really a real world application for everyday users. I think that many cores is more a measure of stupidity than epeen.
Mmhm, I expect a new chipset to come along, but I can't see them making Steamroller incompatible with the current 990FX boards if it does release on AM3+. Suppose it depends on how long the wait for SR actually is.

Haha fair enough! I would love a Titan (or two!) for example but I'd just get the 780(s), compromising the epeen slightly but for the price difference THAT would be stupidity lol, so I do have a little bit of sense.. I keep telling myself anyway

Shouldn't be a big issue. You could sell the upgrades you have made now for a little back and then get the best SR has to offer

Indeed, I know a fair few people who would be extremely happy with the lower priced wishlist on Aria, hell I'd be delirious with it right now. I did see an open box deal on aria for a 7950 so if I got that and then SR was compatible with 990FX I'd probably only be selling the CPU and PSU unless the 8000 series came out and blew minds. SR timeframe upgrades are only speculation at the moment though as I have no idea what sort of budget I'll have by then or what sort of advancements will be made with chipsets etc.

My advice... Upgrade now and you can always sell parts to help pay for the newer upgrades.

Well, maybe in another 2 weeks I'll be able to have the whole setup. Did look into the finance on Aria for going bigger/better but apparently I was declined. Stupid that it doesn't tell you why. Never had a CC/loan or anything like that in my life.
Probably because of the short time I've been in my current job.But yeah, reckon I'll hold off for another couple weeks and see how much I can stretch. Pick up an 8320/50 and grab a better PSU (not comfortable trusting the CX series)

I only trust Seasonic PSUs with Gold or Platnium rating. So i only recommend those.

Well I know some of the Corsair PSUs are Seasonic, the v2 TX series for example, but trying to buy one of the v2 ones specifically online is awkward to say the least, also some XFX I believe are Seasonic.
I'll keep my eyes open for deals and stuff anyway.
