How do i test my network for bottlenecks?

Hello. I would like to get the best speeds i possibly can out of my home network. What are the necessary steps for finding bottlenecks, if any?

My desktop and routers support gigabit ethernet, my server says "10/100/1000 Mbit" and my switcher hub says it supports "10/100Mbps".

This is roughly how i have it laid out...

My transfer speeds between my server and my PC max out at about 11.xMB/s. Is this right? I expected quite a bit more given the setup. Am i missing something?

Sorry for the network noobness.

Cheers,
Chris.

You need a gigabit switch. There's your bottleneck.

Edit: Your pic isn't showing up.

My pic? I can see it :S

My first thoughts were the cheap switch i bought, so i tried transferring files without the switcher and i still max out at 11.x MB/s

What else could be causing it? Not to say the switcher isn't, but there's obviously something else in the equation. Over WiFi my laptop is maxing out at 8-9MB/s.

Any ideas?

Chris.

The pic is an attachment to another forum. You are probably signed in there so you can see it.

Without the switch, how was your PC and server connected? The speeds you are getting suggest it's running at 100Mbit.

WiFi speeds look right, what type of wireless are you running?

Ok sorry, Fixed.

When i tried it with my laptop, i unplugged the input to the switcher and plugged that into my laptop. When i look at my network prefs, it says my link speed is 100 Mbit/s.

My set up is identical to the pic, I use an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express for WiFi.

Chris.

EDIT: The Airport Express is set up to "extend" the network set up on the Extreme.
