Hi all,
Simple question, likely a less than simple answer.
My Gateway PC has two NICs:
Outer network: goes to my Netgear DG834G using a dynamic IP address and handles my internet connectivity just fine. Default gateway is the Routers IP of 192.168.0.1.
Inner Network: is for my Internal network. This NIC connects to my Negear GS608 gigabit switch using a FIXED IP address and NO DEFAULT Gateway. Adding a gateway breaks the network.
Now, the Outer network works fine, identified as "Broadband Router" no problems there.
My Inner Network works fine, but it's UNIdentified. It is however configured as a "Work" network rather than Private as I'd prefer. Still, what bugs me is that I cannot rename it.
I've looked through loads of posts all over the internet where people are asking if it's possible to RENAME their connection, only to be given the following cut / paste answer - including typos as text formatting:
To do this on your local server , follow these steps:
1. Start --> run --> MMC --> press enter
2. In MMC console , from menu file select Add/Remove Snap-in
3. Select Group Policy Object editor --> Press Add --> select Local computer --> press OK -->press OK
4. Open Computer configration -->Windows Settings -->Security Settings -->select Network list manager policies
on the right Side you will see options for :
double click -->Unidentified networks
Then you can select the option to consider the Unidentified networks as private and if user can change the
location.
Ok, this is fine, if I'd asked a DIFFERENT question. It does do what it says, but NOT what is asked.
So, is there any way I can rename an Unidentfied (but set to "Work" network) connection? The name box does not let you edit it.
Ideally I'd like it to indentify it's self properly and just work - like it did with XP. But Vista and W7 changed something - without a default gateway a connection can never be identified. However, with two NICs, you can only have a default gateway on ONE otherwise internet connectivity breaks. Oh, giving it a default gateway sees my inner network being FULLY configurable, I can set to private, rename it etc. but it stops the other connection working...
Likely I'm stuck and cannot rename or create a "proper" home network, but thought I'd ask again here
Cheers,
Scoob.
