How do I connect to the internet using Linux -Ubuntu Live cd?

I am not sure if it is possible using ubuntu live which I am currently having a play with. I would like to connect to the net if possible. I have an alcatel speedtouch on IDnet.

If it is not possible which is the best Linux OS to install for web browsing

Is it a USB modem or router?

Its a usb modem probably speedtouch 330.
