What do people use and what are the pros and cons for it?

Currently using XBMC and files stored on NAS.

Pros:
Plays almost anything you can throw at.
Loads of added functionality from plugins.

Cons:
Disc support I find a bit flaky.

Currently looking at making the move to Plex and centralising my library for multiple devices.

Plex, plex and guess what PLEX. I love it.

Put your movies, music, pictures and tv shows on there. It searches on their database and collects all of the meta data so you get all the information/pictures etc about that item.

You can link it up to TV's, PC's, Mac, Linux, Nas and a lot more. You can even use it at your nans house. If you buy a plex pass for £50 you get more features (£50 is lifetime btw.)

You can also share your server with friends so they can login and watch your films. Listen to your music etc.

I cant think of any cons. Check it out https://plex.tv/

Plex again. Its epic. If you have a samsung smart TV you can go to the app store and install it on your tv for an awesome UI too

I love XBMC, used it for years.

I find Plex to be featureless and ugly in comparison.

Try some alternatives and see what you like!
