Hey so I am going to making a home server that being a Cooler Master Haf xb, now before you say I know its not the ideal case I will be modding the crap out of it to have hotswap bays just working on that but what I need to know is some of the things I need to get for it.
Its going to have all my movies,tv shows, and music and my main system data from my main system and it will be doing some live streaming.

Here is my list of questions what,

  • Cpu
  • Raid Card
  • Network Card
I do not know what I should get?

Advice please also picture is provide of the case!

I have a home server setup, but it only has a single drive, no raid card and no network card, lol.

I can't help you with the raid or network card choices, but I can tell you that my home server is using a dual core processor (E7400 @ 2.8GHz) with 4GBs of RAM. I can stream to multiple devices seamlessly and CPU usage hardly budges. In that case I think any decent dual core will be decent for your needs. It should suffice for live streaming as well, but I am only guessing.

Oh, and for the OS I am using Sever 2008 R2.

Yeah well I have something like 8TB of data that I would not mind cloned so I do not lose it you know. So I do not need a i7 or nothing like that i3 or i5?

Oh, yeah 8TB is really quite a lot. I only have 1 TB so I never really saw the need for a network card.

My dual core hardly breaks a sweat and I'm streaming constantly. Bear in mind, my dual core is also LGA775, so you should be more than fine with a current gen 1155 dual core. I stream to my T.V, main PC, phone as well as numerous laptops, without an issue.

No worries. Do you know which OS you'll be using? If you're a student you could get Server 2008/2012 for free from dreamspark. Or you could just use one of the linux distros and use samba for setting up shared folders, printers, etc.

If you're not doing any on the fly transcoding then a current i3 should do fine. I'm running an 11TB home server with an old amd dual core chip, and never have any problems streaming to multiple devices.

You only need to beef up the spec if you are transcoding or are running virtrual machines. Even 4GB of memory is fine, I think I'm only running 2GB...

i3 is even overkill.

By live streaming Im assuming you mean films, so 4gb is OTT let alone 8GB. Even when one of my programs was downloading all the icon data for 140GB of music mine only sat at 2.8GB used.

The whole point of a home server is low power and silence.

You cant answer how much a raid card will be till you know about drives and how many.

Mine was worth £800 when new and my HDD's best part of £1000.........

Just to scare you and make you rethink things a little.

That case is also complete GASH for a server, its almost a joke tbh.

Yeah well I plan on Modding the Case so it will take 10 3.5 hard drives, the main reason I got that case is the place I am putting it will fit.

Id just get the Fractal ITX case and an ITX board with a pcie slot for the raid card if you want to spent that much.

As for 10 hard drives either you have a lot of money or you seriously need to rethink things :D

To much money would be why! that many hard drives I have 8TB and that is with out backing up of my data so was going to get 4TB Drives and 1 ssd for os.

dontforget raid means you will loose drives for parity.

Ive got 6x 2TB in mine with only 7.2TB usable because of the raid 6

No mate Im saying dont forget you will loose some of the drives.

You need to decide what you need from your array.Youve not told us anywhere near enough details yet.

Oh btw for a server youll need to dust proof the case or youll hate it.... another reason the HAF is a bad choice.

What info do you need only thing I have right now is the case so everything is subject to change!
