listen the island of santorini is a big caldera that has collapsed thats why its kind of a circle the island formed , yes it was an active volcano long time ago , i have been to those islandsi know what im talking about ... i ll try to find somme piccars

That further supports the fact that it is volcanic rock, not ash.

Anyway this is a welcome back thread, not a geology lesson so back on topic.

Wondered where you had been Kemp.

Great shots I especially like shot 2

Doesn't look like you have brought any sunshine back with you though, its lashing down here

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santorini

read the third paragraph
The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history when it erupted cataclysmically some 3,500 years ago, at the height of the Mycenaean epoch. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of feet deep and, according to a theory, its effects may have indirectly led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (70 mi) to the south, due to a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis

ok stop arguing.

The beaches aint made of Volcanic ash, just black sand as it comes from the volcanic rocks worn down by gradual erosion. Mebbe the ash could have been compacted over hundreds of thousands of years into rocks, then they got worn down but it's not directly ash

Enough of that argument mefinks

you realise that eruption was about 3000 years ago right?

i suppose you _may_ have an argument in that volcanic ash sort of has the properties of rock, but other than that, the spoon is staying in the drawer my friend.
