High NB Temps on X58

Recently put togther a new rig and been getting to know it and tweak where possible.

Main Specs:

I7 930

X58 Sabertooth Mobo

Mushkin Redline 1600 Mhz

5870 Toxic

You can see form the below screen shot that I have OC'd the rig and seem to be stable (Memtest/Prime/Intel Burn etc ect)

However I am concerned about my NB temps, I see around 70 C Idle and have seen as high as 81c under very heavy prolonged load.

As this is my first outing with an I7 rig, should I be concerned with such high temps on my NB?

Please see screenshots below to get a better idea of my set up.

You havnt said what volts you are using on the NB

Awesome looking rig though, shame you never posted a build log here.

ps: thats mushkin Ridgeback not redline

Nice build! I don't think the temps are anything to worry about. What parts make up your water cooling? I love the sleeving and those ridgebacks look great!

I honestly couldn't tell you right now what my NB runs at, but I do know the heatsink is hot to the touch. It's been that way for 9 months or so, so I'm not too concerned.

Arr bugger...thanks Tom.. I was in a rush when I made the post.

I did have the Volts at 1.18v I have taken them down to 1.16 and remained stable but did not notice any drop in temps.

I meant ridgeback...bought off the back of your top review btw..

and what great stuff it is...

I think the main issue I have is that as I am not using a standard Air CPU cooler so I am not gettng the benefit of the additonal air flow of that. Does that sound plausable?

I have got an Antec Spot fan (its ugly as sin and sounds like a hurricane) but I might try that as a temp measure to see.

I also noticed a small threaded hole on the NB heatsink, any ideas what that is for? I may be able to use that and make a small fan shroud.

As i mentioned, I am stable but it is concerning that these temps seem so high.

PS..I did keep a basic log so when I get a minute I might post it up..

I think you will be ok with it tbh dude, it does get very hot when under load anyways. I wouldnt worry.

Install a 40mm fan on NB and temps will drop to 60 C.I had Sabertooth with CPU watercooled and had the same up to 80 C.

BTW - Nice build mate.

Thanks for the positive feedback on the build.

All I need now is to sort the horrible Grey Screen of Death on my ATI card.

Wow, very nice RIG, love the single sleeving.

How can you find out the Temp of the NB, is there software ?

Well I popped the Antec spot fan right over the block last night and at the lowest speed setting (hardly pushing any air) it dropped the idle temps to 55c straight away!!!! Under load it never went over 60c.

I think I am going to take the block off and re apply some MX. Jury is still out these Ceram1x blocks and if they are nay better than the standard copper.

Thanks for you help guys, i feel better now about the temps, just seems like these X58 NB/s run very hot.

PS Thanks Craigos..not sure my poor little fingers agree but the single sleeving is worth the effort if you are looking for clean look

Mhmm... good to see that the temperatures have dropped! 80c is way too high for a NorthBridge! Why not up the Spotfans speed until it's too noisy for your linings and be done with it? I personally wouldn't want my NB running that hot as they can't take the heat as well as a GPU or CPU.

Lovely rig, though!

Its fine on that mobo actually. Its not like the X48 days dude.

A change of tim would help but its not that big a deal tbh.

I still wouldn't like to have my NB at such a high temperature. I know those boards are made to be reliable but at those temperatures it couldn't last that long to be honest.

unless it was made for that. i mean, you have to realize that no reputable manufacturer would put a product out with high temperatures without making sure it's safe or not.

my Rampage II Gene's NB gets pretty hot too...

Asus still needs to learn that "earwax does not a good thermal paste make" !!

Ask any R3E owner, first job with a new Asus board is wip off the cooler and do the job right with decent tim

fantastic build BTW, great job

Merry Christmas

I know the feeling dude! I was scared shitless that I haven't done something right but when in a case and not much air passing by it it seems the Sabertooth's heatsink doesn't work properly. I stuck a fan there as well.. Should've got the UD3R Rev 2 me
