Hey there, question about possible GPU problem...

Hi, im not sure how to describe this but it seems that my gpu fans "or one of the fans at least" has been acting up.

I bought my custom built computer almost 3 years ago and it was fine for a long time, i was able to play Crysis and still can play the newer games with reasonable frame rates 30-50 fps.

Now i find that i hear a fan that starts speeding up and slowing down (for about 2 seconds at a time going up and down) for almost no reason in certain areas of games new and old, but for some games new or old its stays fine the whole time. I know it sounds weird, at first i thought it was GFX intensive areas or something and that maybe my card was getting fried or faulty but it seems that in some other games its fine no matter what despite the GFX.

Has anybody else had this problem? What could cause it? I did OC my card a bit but everything was fine after multiple stress tests and i took all proper precautions and it was only a short time since i turned it back down to normal not long after.

If anybody has information on this id apprieciate a reply.

Thank you.

it must be the gpu temp sensor speeding up the fans,i can play just cause 2 and the fan will alternate and if i play GTAIV it stay on max thats if i leave the fan on auto.

you may have a dodgy sensore or you could just set the fan do your desired speed

Hmm could be, but i also notice a slight frame rate drop (about 2-5 FPS) when the fan speeds up for that couple of seconds which makes me wonder.

Thanks for the reply, anyone else have any ideas?

Maybe ill try putting my GPU fan on 100% instead of 80% and see what happens...

hmm the frame drops shouldent happen tho, maybe it is getting to warm, what GPU do you have?

were did you buy your Computer from

I have a 8800 GTS 512 (G92 board)

I bought my computer from a very reputable place in my city called CBIT Computer Boulevard, everything was fine. Maybe i somehow damaged it with overclocking but i don't think so, like i said, it runs fine for most games, even newer ones, but some seem to make it start doing the funny frame rate dropping thing with the fan sound going up and down at certain parts.

I just can't make sense of it lol...

erm yer i had a similar problem were one of my HDD's was failing and when it span back up the frames dropped rapidly for a few seconds then it was fine, altho ime not sure it be that if thre jst full.call the company you baught it off it should be still under warranty

How often do you defrag your HDD? If it's absolutely full then yea it might be having a little trouble with speed on accessing files but it really shouldn't make that big of a difference I would think.
