Hey. Ram frequency questions.

Hello.
So my friend has a computer,
G.SKILL Sniper Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200)
ASUS P9X79 WS
Intel Core i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E 6-Core 3.4GHz.
He gets 18,000 points @ 4.8 ghz on the "www.cpubenchmark.net" "performance test" cpu benchmark.

I have the
Intel Core i7-4930K Ivy Bridge-E 6-Core 3.4GHz
ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 2011 Intel X79
Crucial Ballistix 8GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866
I get 12,000 points at 4.8 ghz on the "www.cpubenchmark.net" "performance test" cpu benchmark.
as you can see, his ram is better. Could ram really be making such a massive difference? and if so, could i buy a 3000 ddr3 ram to beat his score?

by far Impossible. maybe he has overclock he doesnt know about. or your cpu is overheating and throttling

If your getting 12,000 then there's something wrong as I ran it the other day and got just over 14,000 and I'm on a quad core.

^ +1 I was going to say how are you running less than 16GB [4x4GB] on an X79 board.

And no 'just' buying 3000MHz ram might not guarantee you could beat him as its unlikely you will be able to achieve a 4.8GHz overclock and run 3000MHz memory at the same time. Get some LN2 if your really desperate to beat him it will be far cheaper than a quad channel 3000MHz memory kit lol.

Well what am i doing wrong then? I am so disappointed with the poor performance, i wanted to do video rendering.

What do you mean i can't get 3 ghz ram and 4.8 ghz cpu?
can't i just buy ram that is rated at 3 ghz without any overclocking and then overclock my cpu to 4.8? I don't understand what is the difference between running stock 1.833 ghz ram with overclocked 4.8 ghz cpu, and running stock 3 ghz ram with 4.8 ghz cpu.

edit: sorry for the double post, i was assuming it would just glue my posts together like all modern forum software does.

edit: so what do i do? sabertooth x79 does not support ram better then 1833

3000mhz RAM is rubbish as the timings are too slack.

It would also be very unlikely that you could get it to run at much over 2600mhz on X79.

If you're only using a single 8GB stick then the system is operating in Single Channel mode. This means you have 1/4th the memory bandwidth that your friend has as he is operating in Quad Channel mode.

These kind of things do show up on benchmarks but don't really make much difference in real world loads as most apps don't stress the memory in the same ways that Benchmarks do.

But I'd still run Quad Channel anyway to get the most performance especially as you've gone X79, it's a waste not to run Quad Channel memory when its available.

I would not go too much on using the Passmark Performance test bench as it is useless at some things like multi GPU support.

If you want to test the CPU try running the latest version of cinebench.

As Vicey said you really need to get a quad channel kit of memory in there. 16gb (4x 4gb) is the optimum for X79 unless you have some really heavy number crunching to do.

The best speed performance wise is 2400mhz (for X79) as these sticks tend to come with better timings too but can be a little expensive.

I got X79 Sabertooth, and I can asure U, that it can go 2133MHz+ (with My CPU at least) :)
When I get close to ~2,4GHz on RAM, my IMC need's a lot more Voltage to be stable tho.

Big Question is : Have U got Quad Channel or not.

What is LN2?

edit: okay buying quad channel kit, ill let you know how it goes.

He was only joking about using l2n :p
Exterme overclockers use liquid nitrogen to cool down the overclocked components close to -196c
Thats also what they use for setting world records

At that price you mine as well move up to DDR4 and x99. Price is damn near the same as what the x99 cpus will cost. You don't need 2800mhz as i hardly doubt you can run it at that speed with such a high CPU overclock. I doubt you'll get past even 2400mhz.

he has to /pray for a strong memory controller!

okay so... I downloaded cpu-z and the first thing that i noticed was that my ram is in single channel mode. *facepalm*. I looked at the manual, and put my 2 sticks of ram into their appropriate dual channel locations, and now my memory is in dual channel. So I ran the benchmark. at stock clock speed, 12,500 points. At 1833 mhz and 4.6 ghz, I hit 16,500 points!
The depressing fact is, I purchased the muskin memory earlier today.
