Hey, looking for some advice

Yeah not new here, but it has been awhile ;)

Well its been about three years and I think it's time to get a new desktop, and naturally since I've been out of the scene for so long, I don't know what exactly would be a smart buy. I'm looking just for some suggestions for (sorry that it's one of these threads) cpu, ram, mobo, psu, gpu, etc. I want something that's powerful of course, ocing is not going to be the main thing here this time, I really want a quiet pc, but if I could run Crysis (I don't know what games they use to benchmark anymore) that'd be a nice plus as well.

As for a monitor I was looking at the Dell s2409, that seems to be a favorite here, or a Samsung toc 22" (not full HD, 1680x1050 I think); I'm looking for an HDMI input and a tv tuner but I haven't found anything besides Samsung that fulfills that requirement.

I know I don't contribute much to the forums, but you guys really are the best forum out there, plus I have little nostalgia with this website (it's grown so much).

edit: wow, I'm just looking at cpu's right now, and it's completely different than how I remember (dual core just came out, intel regained the crown), there seem to be like too many processors to choose from.

Welcome to the forum, best thing to do is get admin/mods to move this to the correct section so it will get interest from the right guys.

Budget is deffo the first thing we will need to know though dude ;)

i would go for a socket 775 machine as i7 is expensive at the moment

Q9550

P45 motherboard

ATI HD4870 or Nvidia 280

4Gb of ddr2

and a nice case

a 1TB Hdd

and a good branded psu

If you get a high end gpu and a quad you may aswell get ddr3.

If its for games Id also stay dual core and save the cash as a quad wont help with fps.

E8500/E8600 and a top end ddr3 x48/p45 mobo.

I do full builds aswell dude, so I can spec you a pc, give it a good home case wise and send it to you ready to roll.

Well if im honest if your gonna nuy a new rig and you have around 1k I wouyld go i7 as your starting from scratch.

Many M/board to go for gigabyte have good reports witht he i7 platform rmapage II I highly recommend but ids more expensive, evga there all pretty good. i7 920 cpu overclocks like mad, some nice ddr3 tri channel memory e.g corsair /OCZ then its down to how much you wanna spend on gfx, how good do you want it? the psu will of course depend on your graphics but £100 buys a decent psu for pretty much all cards

I agree with both TTL and Swale the fact you have an i7 wont affect your FPS as TTL said but it will make it more future proof as Swale said... I personally would go for a i7 as you can see i already have :D... here'es my suggested build...

Intel Core i7 920

DFI Lan Party LP

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?DFI-X58EH6

ATI HD4870 1GB

G.Skill 1600MHz Triple Channel Kit (3x1GB)

Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB

Coolermaster Real Power 1000w

LG GGW-H20L Blu-Ray Rewriter

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?LG-GGCH20O

AND a good case and i think the MOBO has a nice inbuild sound card to be honest...

All of this comes to= £950 (overestimate)

*Monitor= http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?IIY-E2407 This monitor is amazing! and very nicely priced... although it doesnt have a TV tuner...

*Hates Stalker* I want that monitor now... £180??

Stalker you forgot a case so ya know, might as well i7 if you got a grand as some games will one day use quad/octo cores (HT).

Well I guess I'll go with the i7, I want to get an HTCP case but I'm afraid it will be loud... any suggestions for an hsf?

Also, do I really need a 1000w psu? Like will 650 do?

Nothing is set in stone but I think this is wht I'm going to go with:

AMD Phenom II x3 720 under a zalman cnps9900led

Asus M4A79

G.skill 2x2gb ddr2 1066

Sapphire 4870 1gb

WD caviar black 640gb

corsair 750w (not really sure about this one, it's the most popular on newegg)

Lian-li a05

lg dvd burner

Logitech z-2300

Dell s2409w (ps3 will be getting hooked up as well)

copy of Vista (32)

it all comes out to around 15/1600 usd; the pc itself comes out basically at 1000. So what do you guys think? Should I add a sound card? And what about my psu and hsf choices?

Corsair are decent PSU makers. I wouldn't go with i7 because performance wise for games you'd be paying alot of money for not much difference.

DDR3 hasn't got a major advantage over DDR2 yet so sticking with that is good. Until DDR2 production slows down and starts to rise in price there really is no need to get DDR3 unless i7 or DDR3 board.

As for your OS make sure you can get the x64 version as the 32 bit one wont see all 4GB of your ram.

Sound card? Depends on how much of an audiophile you are. I suppose you could change the HSF and get one of the Noctua ones (can't remember the exact name) or the TRUE (Thermalright Ultra) + a Scythe S-FLEX or better still Scythe Ultra Kaze 2000 (4dB more noiser than the Scythe and you'd probably have to attach it with some cable ties but you could easily put it on a fan controller or a volt mod wire.)
