hi there! i very much need some assistance please.

first off im very green and have just built my first custom pc. so as you may guess i have becoome stuck

asus sabertooth x58

intel i7 950

gigabyte gtx 460 ti soc

12gb mushkin blackline

128gb kingston ssd

the problem i have is from the very first moment i pressed the on switch, the led's went round and all seemed good, got into bios fine.

trouble is that the optical drive wont open, the light blinks when i press open so it has power. its name is there in the bios too, it just wont open or spin. and i need this to put windows and drivers on and dont know how to fix it.

i have also tried a different drive which had the same problem, so it cant be a faulty drive.

any help on this would be muchly appreciated

thanks

might be stuck or bad there is a tiny hole near the open button carefully push in a straight paperclip and see if it opens that way. This is the mechanical release for the drive. You'll have to push with a lil force but not alot. give it a go and post back

He said he tested another drive, so the drive isn't it. Try putting your SATA cable into another port on the motherboard

Hi & welcome,

Congrats on the new build BTW

If the drive is not ejecting then I would keep trying different things to see if I can find the problem. For example trying it in a different sata port, try using another sata power cable, if you have a modular PSU try swapping it to a different output rail etc

You did say it was working fine on another machine but try the paperclip method to at least get the drive open and insert the installation disc and try and at least see if it can read from the drive.

If you still getting problems then disconnect the PSU from all PC components. Use the paperclip method to trick the PSU into thinking that its connected to a PC and then only connect the power cable to the drive and see if it opens.

Fail in that, try installing from a USB drive.

i couldnt of wished for more.

you will all be glad to know that the problem is solved and all is now up and running, i tried a few suggestions but what finally worked was simply swapping the sata cables over, they all still work they just didnt each work in all the ports, i dont know if thats common but i confess i found it a little strange.

im delighted of course in the fact my months of work and money have paid off and its all working great, and also in the fact that you have all been of great help and i know where to go if ever i get stuck again

thanks again for all your help and support
