just a question, are you running AOL, if so, just type in PC checkup in the address bar in the aol window..if your running anythign else, there sould be an option to turn off windows messenger :)

Here's my advice:

1. Install Service Pack 2: Don't be a RETARDED MONKEY. And I truly mean that in the nicest possible, non-flaming way...but if you use Internet Explorer and you don't have SP2 on your machine your machine it will only be a matter of time before your machine is infected with Spyware. Check out http://www.benedelman.org/news/111804-1.html for a great article on how fast an unpatched XP machine hooked up to the net will get infected.

2. Install and Run AVG Free: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

We can all sit here and debate which is the best Anti-Virus software until we're blue in the face. I recommend AVG Free over Norton because (A. AVG is Free versus Norton costing $50 a year, B. Norton is a notorious resource hog). I've hear very good things about Nod32, the only downfall being that its not free.

3. Install and Run A-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/

A-squared COMPLEMENTS your Anti-Virus software by specializing in finding and removing those pesky Trojans. The free version of A-squared does not have a background scanner, so you'll have to run the scanner manually once and a while...which is better in my mind as you don't have it taking up RAM and CPU resources. After your trials and tribulations thus far I have a feeling you'll want to get this quickly.

4. Install and Run Spybot and/or Lavasoft's Adaware

We've talked about Spybot already. Adaware is also free and does essentially the same thing as Spybot.

Disable system restore and run spybot and adaware (make sure they're updated).

Download 'hijack this' http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

A few other programs such as cwshredder and startup inspector are also useful at same link.

Post your hijack this log at a spyware forum if you can't understand it yourself (you won't to begin with but you'll soon get used to reading them).

Mcafee has a weak virus database with slow signature updates... NOD32 updates itself like 3 times a day on my rig w/ the latest breaking viruses.

Also... Mcafee = resource hog. Uses way to much RAM and CPU power, just a poor design thats all.

NOD32 uses only traces of CPU/Memory. NOD32 catches all sorts of shit that Norton or McAfee would have never caught before it became an infection problem.

There's just something about the way NOD32 was programmed that just makes it 10x better than all of the large corporate wang AV proggies.

/me suggests you buy NOD32 :)

Hmm okay what makes NOD32 better than say..McAfee for instance?

The main strength for me with NOD32 is its Advanced Heuristics, I don't believe McAffee use this technique, I can't be sure as I don't use that product. Below is a description of heuristics taken from the nod32 website.

Best antivirus program heuristics?

Listed below are a few of the viruses that became wildspread (some entries includes aliases). All of these are detected by NOD32 heuristics, without requiring any update.

Some of these were detected several months before they were released, and even before they were written!

While other antivirus companies had to rush to get an update out before the worm spread too much, NOD32's heuristic analysis engines were detecting and blocking these, without requiring any updates!

News: Win32/Swen.A (alias Win32/Gibe.F or Worm.automat.ahb) has attacked hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide, many of them using up-to-date antivirus software which failed to prevent the infection... Even a month old NOD32 detected the worm with the advanced heuristics engine, without requiring signature updates.

What are heuristics?

An antivirus program with heuristic capabilities will be able to detect variants of known viruses, and even brand new unknown viruses without requiring updates. There is no program that can detect all future worms and viruses without updates, but detecting unknown viruses can make a BIG difference.

What is the Advanced Heuristics in NOD32?

NOD32 version 2 features a new advanced heuristic engine that is enabled in IMON as default. That means that all incoming mail from POP3 servers will get scanned with an extra layer of protection. The Advanced Heuristics has a high level of detection for new unknown viruses.

END

Basically NOD32 has an excelent track record over at virusbulletin.com, and so far has managed to detect 100% of 'in-the-wild' viruses.

Something that NO other virus scanner comes close to.

If you give a crap about your PC, then NOD32 is the only way to go.
