Help: Transferring large files/information from a dying drive

First post here, been a lurker until today. Thanks in advance for anything you guys might know.

I have a 2tb Western Digital Internal Caviar Green HDD that is on its way out, with extremely inconsistent read/write speeds (generally close to 1mb/ps) that frequently crashes and lags out any program that may be running. It's gotten to the point where I can't even empty my Recycle Bin without waiting literally 40 minutes per gigabyte.

I ran some diagnostics and my CrystalDiskInfo reads as follows:

Code:

So after some pretty extensive troubleshooting, I decided on replacing my HDD with an exact model, and ordered it.

My trouble is that with the current performance, I might be unable to migrate my 1.5tb of data from drive a to drive b. Is there any more efficient means other than copy+paste to preserve my content without crashing the unstable unit or otherwise taking hundreds of hours?

Thanks heaps for taking the time to read this.

you'll want to clone the drive if your trying to make an exact copy. Copying and pasting will fubar the job. dont run anymore diagnostic or benches on it until you have cloned it. diagnostics and benches can make it fail sooner if its already dying.

What would you say is the best method of going about cloning it? Google is failing me.

I've used casper before without any issues Its free to try but the free version will not resize the drive so unless your using the same size drive you'll either have a smaller partition or the same size with extra space left over.

OP has returned, thank you for your help, I figured everything out from what you told me and some reasoning.

Only problem now is that some applications are trying to install to my old drive letter, and I'm having troubles remapping.

get those files transferred.. when the controller bobs the OS, its not long before
it crackles and pops..
keep the transfer loads small and short.. when the OS notices the onboard controller
and assigns the drive letter, then make your transfers.. get the easy short files.
the longer files will cause heat and dodgienes..

How long have you had the hard drive? Less that 3 years call WD, you could get it replaced for free.

For some reason .exe(s) and installers are trying to install to my old drive's letter, and then crash. Not all .exe(s), but a lot of them.

For example, my old drive's letter was ( L: ) and my new drive's letter is ( X: ), when I run an installer that is located on my ( X: ) drive, it frequently gives me the error message "L: is an invalid drive/location."

I think it may be a registry error, but I've already modified my user shell so that msi would no longer target my L: drive. It still happens, and sometimes Steam games will install improperly too. It seems as though they are targeting the L: drive regardless of my regedit settings.

Any ideas?

In Disk Management you could try changing drive letters. It may screw up new installs that worked though. You could change the L drive to Z, then change the X drive to L. Then L is your new drive. Any old references to L will take you to the new drive then.
