Help needed & possible advice!

ok, this is pretty hard to explain, so i'll sum it up as best i can.

bought an 8800gt, had weird problems with crashing, seemed it had stopped, then it was crashing games with a looping sound & sometimes able to get out of the game.

other problems occured such as crashing right when i got into windows, and only way to fix that was to spend hours messing around while on my 7900gt. after i thought i solved the problem, a day later it occured again. even changing gpus and fiddling with a lot of stuff couldn't fix it & it was bsod/crashing at windows loading. underclocking everything didn't help, so i reset bios, and problem was gone. problem came back after i added a light OC to my cpu, so i managed to load up safemode and do a system restore.

now my pc is working fine but i haven't tried crysis or other games which are intensive. if it comes back i'm gonna assume my mobo is broke or something as i don't see how a gpu can make windows bsod while booting.

tl;dr -

can a gpu make windows bsod while booting, or is it more likely to be another component?

can a gpu make your computer hang every time you get into windows? and why would it still do it when you change gpu?

so long story short, do you think i should just buy some new parts?

i've got £140 to buy a new mobo, ram & cpu. i don't mind oc'ing but it would have to be faster than my current fx60, AND it would be with stock HSF. i'm not too clued up on cheap c2d ocing so recommendations for these parts would be great, thx!

btw, i doubt it's my psu as 8800gt wants 400W and 500W is recommended - i have 580W.

thanks for listening to me ramble on & any help/ideas appreciated!

not all PSUs are created equal - there are better & worse PSUs.

Also load balancing comes into it - is the gfx card on it's own dedicated rail or are other things being powered off the same rail?

it's a tagan 580w and i've got the 12v rails set to combined.

cpu is overclocked and so is 8800gt, yesterday there were no crashes playing crysis but today there was, so it might happen again.

i can't believe there's only been one reply to the topic ;( what happened to all the help on this forum? although my problem is slightly odd.

can someone recommend me a mobo and cpu for £120 which will be a lot faster than fx60 when oc'd?

cmon guys ;(

have you tried running it with the rails set as separate?

& PSU's fail - I had 1 go a couple of weeks ago after 2 years of sterling service.

Was perfect the night before when I shut it down, got up in the morning & it would crash shortly after getting into Windows.

Been RMA'ed & replaced as faulty.

& it's Easter weekend so maybe people are busy with other things?

two new problems:

when i press ctrl+f and search for something, explorer crashes, but when i click search from the start menu, no crash D:

media files make my computer freeze temporarily when i click on them, perfmon reports it as a blank area on the graph.

i've used chkdsk on all of my disks and no problems..?

so is my hardware just f88888?

edit: i havent put it on split because my 8800gt requires more than what 1 rail can give & i dont know if it can draw power from 2nd rail at the same time while spit.

i've just done the everest stress test and about 1min in, the system locks up with everest displaying 'floating point overflow'

an 8800GT has a tdp of ~109W iirc so only requires about 10A for itself (total system requirement is of course higher).

ok thx, but i'm pretty sure it's not my gpu now as the comp bsod's when i run the everest stress test for about 1min, which doesnt have anything to do with the gpu as i'm sure you know.

i'm looking at getting an e8200 as i can pick it up for 114£. do you think this is a solid investment seeing as i'll be overclocking it with (probably getting) ocz ddr2-800 platinum 2gb kit. which should let me run it at ddr2-1000 for a nice performance boost ;o any ideas on a good cheap mobo which will allow 250fsb?

k ty.

not saying that it's your GPU just that it should be OK to run with split rails.

I'm not sure that OCZ Platinum will do DDR2 1000, more like DDR2 900?

How about an abit IP35-E or IP35 (same but with RAID & firewire, £58 over the Easter weekend)?
