help me decide (quickly)

i am looking for a new webcam...

my research has narrowed the choice down to:

  1. Microsoft LifeCam Studio Full HD 1080p
  2. Logitech C920 HD Webcam
but, which one is better? (Harry Hill..... "FIGHT!")

my research:

the lifecam studio:

PROS: better colour contrast; better at 720; can swivel 250degs; excellent audio; ~£50
CONS: bad software; terrible 1080; no permanent lens cover (has lens cap); old/slow encoding

the C920:
PROS: better firmware = better 1080; faster H264(Vers.16) encoding; glass lens protector (dont having to fiddle with a lens cap)
CONS: unable to swivel; no hi-fidelity audio; ~£70

I have always had a soft spot for Microsoft products (bar the 360) And from what I have just looked up the LifeCam is better than the C910 but I couldn't find much when comparing it to the C920

the c920 has all the issues of the c910 fixed

i have ordered the c920... getting it 2moro :D

NOTE: if i dont like the audio, i can always get a seperate condenser mic :P

cheers guys

I know i'm an hour or two late...but!

I've got the logitech C525 (720p res) and frankly it's awesome as far as webcams go. I went for the 720p because the internet connection at my parents or girlfriend's houses can't manage anything that high anyway. The mic is pretty good, I've stopped using my headset as a result.

the c920 has a 15mp camera, and does 720p @live_streaming(ie: skype) or 1080p @recording_video

the lifecam studio only has a 5mp camera, and has no zoom at 1080p :(

i think i made the right choice :D

well, after receiving the Logitech C920 HD webcam, i am very pleased with it.

  • unpacked easier than some of the reviewers on the web made it out to be
  • no software came with it. plugged it in win7 installed it. then, did a windows update, and that downloaded ALL the software for it.
  • records at 1080p/15mp/30fps. not a problem. flies through it.
  • encodes lightning fast (30secs video = 3secs encoding).
  • video calls at 1080p/5mp/30fps. crystal clear. no ghosting. quick re-focus.
  • the software instanting recognises all other Video/Image Capture apps installed on a system, and preconfigures them.
  • audio recording is better than expected (after research let it down a bit).

i think the reason why some many users have problems with it is: the host PC, they attach this cam too, is not powerful enough for it. the cam has avery beefy processor in it: probably causes bottlenecks in low-spec computers.

so this is just a heads-up for anyone wishing to buy or upgrade their webcams.

Oh! BTW... it looks awesome mounted upon my Iiyama Prolite too ;)

I thought the whole idea was that the processor on the webcam would STOP the bottlenecking caused by slower machines? The encoding it does on the webcam itself should stop the PC from needing to utilise its CPU as much when using the wbcam, but maybe i've understood.
Glad you're happy with your purchase :)
