Help, I think my CPU is overheating

Hi Guys,

I think my CPU is over heating. I am seeing temps when idle of around 65 degrees. This does not seem normal.

I have am Intel core i7-930 (my test rig). This is not overclocked. I have the factory cooler on it. When under load the highest i have seen is 101 degrees. I am pretty sure something is up but not too sure what.

It has plenty of ventilation. I have a Antec DF-85 case with all fans running including the optional GPU fan. all airflows are not obstructed so there is good flow through the system.

reset the cpu heatsink and try again, using decent thermal paste.

Gotta agree with dugdiamond you will prbably find that the thermal paste has dried out and needs replacing some arctic mx4 should do the trick

have you checked the heatsink to see if its fitted right?

sounds more like its not clamped down in 1 corner tbh but what does cpuz show?

repaste it, suggest mx4 or other non conductive of your liking

Even with a stock cooler and cheap thermal paste you should not see temps in that range with no overclock. as has already been said apply

new Thermal paste and make sure the heatsink is seated correctly.

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the respomses it is much appreciated.

After reading your replies i have inspected the Heatsink and found that the past was dried up and the cooler was also not seated completely, it was only pined in on two sides. This rig was built bay a "no name" local computer shop as a result i will never go there again.

One more question if i may. Haveing used the rig for best part of 2yrs now with out monitoring temps, is it possible this has damaged the CPU?

after re-setting the heatsink, it'll be trial and error

if your temps drop drastically, then you have saved the chip

if done correctly, you should be fine...

... only BSODs (crashing) will be the tell-tale signs of a damaged cpu

normally though the thermal cutout should kick in before a cpu gets too toasty.

my cpu retention plate broke a few weeks ago and i am so glad the thermal cutout was there as all i heard was a slight crack / pop (as the lower retention lug sheard off), then 5 seconds later the whole computer shut down.

Sounds like your heatsink is filled with dust. After you take off the heatsink use the vacuumcleaner and compressed air on it. When that is done you should clean off old thermal paste and apply new. I would recomend you to get a better aircooler also.

When you clean the heatsink/cpu you should use arcticlean or something similar.
