Help converting mkv to gif

So, I want to make a gif-avatar of a small 5-10 second part of a movie coded in .mkv, and I've searched around a bit, but can't seem to find a proper tutorial for this.

So then I was wondering if anyone here have the knowledge on how to get this done, preferably without installing tons of different software and codec-packs, but if I have to to get the job done, so be it.

For those who wonders what scene from what movie, it's the scene where the squirrel gets hit in the head with a nut in Tinkerbell. I laughed myself silly when I saw it! :D

.mkv is an odd format. You'd be better off editing and re-encoding the certain part of the movie into a .wmv or .avi using a decent video editor such as Sony Vegas, and then making a .gif through Photoshop.

get mkv2vob and convert to an easier format to work with, then open in a video editor of your choice if u have one, pull out the frames you want and make a new file (much easier this way)

then import the frames as layers in photoshop and make your gif.

wala lol

(if you have a copy of after effects you could probably do it ALL in that but meh)

Thanks for the tips, guys, but I'm still having trouble. VirtualDubMod is just lame, won't let me load any files, not even after using mkv2vob to convert them to avi or vob. Any other suggestions?
