Hi,another noob.

Im trying to overclock my system but cant get passed 2.6 ghz.

Ive tried everything and need help please

OS = Vista 32 bit

Case = Cooler Master Centurion case

PS = Thermaltake Toughpower 650W

CPU = Core 2 Duo costa rica E6600 2.4GHz-4MBcache-socket LGA775

Cpu cooling = OCZ Vendetta CPU Cooler Socket 92mm Fan kit

Temp = Via nvidia monitor = cpu 37c system = 41c (temptaken as i write this with nothing else running)

Mobo = ASUSTeK P5N32-E SLI PLUS

Bios = 1002 (latest)

RAM = 4 X DDR2 Corsair xms2 6400 c5 800mhz

Harddrives = Twin 35gig raptors in raid-o

Graphics = 2 x NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS in SLI

Temp = Via nvidia monitor = gpu 64c gpu2 = 72c (temp taken as i write this with nothing running)

Sound = Onboard DirectSound Version 6.0.6000.16386

Screen = SyncMaster 206BW,SyncMaster Magic CX206BW (Digital) 3000 : 1 contrast ratio

Overclocked as follows............

Using Ntune on coarse tune

cpu core= 2610

fsb=1164

mem=873

spp & mcp pci-e = 2850

Temps = cpu - 42c system- 46 hardgaming (using nvidia moitor)

gpu core = 576 to 619 (done manually by keeping the nvidia monitor and keeping the values with a green square (if i increase values higher it turns to red)

gpu mem = 837 to 924

:wavey: Hello mate and welcome to OC3D. I've moved your thread to a more appropriate section of the forum, and one where you will receive some help. Your E6600 should be good for 3.0Ghz on almost stock voltage. I'll post back here in a bit with a few things to try.

Im assuming that my rig is capable of way more considering ive added good cooling etc but i just cant do it ,i have tried and tried.

And i have read a far amount to make sure my questions are not to silly.

I am desperate at the moment and have a few newbee problems.

1 - I assume ntune is not a good idea from things ive read ?

2 - in my bios my fsb is 1066 and mulitplyer of 9 as standard which confuses me.

3 - If i use AI Overclock it wont show the speed in the bios or on the ntune view monitor

4 - My first manual overclock (not using ntune) was 1.45volt to the Vcore and dropped multi to 8 and raised fsb to 1400, I left the ram as linked so i think it decreased to compensate but i dont really kow what im saying here !this crippled the system and i had problems with the bios hanging,i had to f5 restore defaults before the hang but just recovered the system but had to use os to recover because vista would not boot.

5 - when ntune is tuning i get a memory crash blue screen at 297mhz from 267mhz .final tune figure that the program settles at is 289 or something.

6 - i have 4 gig of ram but sys shows only 3 gig but the bios shows 4 gig as available,3dmarko6 shows 3gig but shows all the ram slots as full i.e 4 gig (which has confused me no end)

7 - Ive tried 0805 and now 1002 bios updates and i have checked them but stll have problems.

I hoping someone has a similiar rig and would like to attempt to use there settings so i at least would get some form of success and a base to understand and work from etc

Any advice and guidance would be very very appreciated for what its worth

1 - I assume ntune is not a good idea from things ive read ? Correct. You want to manually set everything in the bios (we'll get to that later)

2 - in my bios my fsb is 1066 and mulitplyer of 9 as standard which confuses me. Your fsb is quad pumped. 1066/4 = 266.5 your actual fsb. Multiply this by your cpu multi (9) and you get... 2.4ghz your cpu's stock speed.

3 - If i use AI Overclock it wont show the speed in the bios or on the ntune view monitor Pass. Well, I beleive this is because it is software overcl

ing and has no effect on the bios, the oc is applied in vista somehow.

There is more than just cpu vcore to consider. You have four 1gb sticks of ram which can be a pita to OC, your ram divider needs seting, try 1:1 for now. You were shooting for 2.8, 310(1240)*9 might work better...

It is common to see 3-3.2gb on 32bit OS using 4gb. You need 64bit to get the full 4gb.

I have removed ntune and 1 gig or ram

Also have installed PC probe which keeps giving MB Temp warnings of 47c

I have tried another overclock im hoping to post back the settings in 5 mins from this post.

Hello gain !

Ok,im now gettimg worried in a positive way,hop i dont fry anything.

Have tried the following

Nvidia GPU Ex: Disable

Spread Spectrum Control: Disabled all of them

Execute Disable Bit: Disabled it

Virtualization Technology: Disabled it

Enhanced Intel Speedstep: Disabled it

Enhanced C1 (C1E): Disabled it

AI Tuning =manaul

System clocks = left all as 100 and auto for spp,mcp (not sure what all this is)

FSB Mem clock mode = unlinked (tried linked but sys kept freezing)

FSB Mem ratio = auto

FSB QDR Mhz = 1250

Actual FSB =1250

Mem DDR = 800

Actual Mem DDR = 795.5

VCore = Auto (pcprobe shows 1.41volts)

All other Over voltage settings as auto

Getting 2.81 ! show i now be checking temps ?

Pc probe 2

CPU as i type = 46 to 48c (cpu fan showing 1700 rpm)

MB as i type = 46c (pcprobe 2 shows memory at 1.89volts)

Have not touched any ram latency settings as i dont have a clue.Have done a little reading but ram is beyond my graspe and bottle !

Am i on the right track or am i on the verge of disarster ! ?

I'm forever linking people to this guide as it outlines the principles of overclocking. You won't have the same bios but the method is the same. Read and understand this and you will make leaps and bounds with your overclocking.

Re. the removal of one ram stick - this is not necessary, it is more of a case that 4 sticks don't OC as well as 2. It won't have a huge impact but you may have to tweak subtimings, again, we'll get to that later.

I suggested a 1:1 ram divider to remove ram as the limiting factor.

Read the article and take some time to think about it, look in your bios and then ask more questions

Wasnt sure about 1:1 ration as the ram speed shot from the below current 88 to 1280 (matching the fsb speed) do you think its ok to try that ?

Now running....

Mem is showing 44c

I havnt done any thing with the ram as im unsure what to do,im hoping the FSB mem ration set as auto will take care of it ?
