HDD broken, hot PCB

hey all,
me again...

another problem to be solved ;)
ok, i have a 2tb buffalo external hard drive for my media player in my living room, and it was being used, and according to the person using it, the folders started coming up as empty. so as he had to go back to uni in another country, i was tasked with fixing it.
so i tried plugging it into the PC, but it didn't work, the drive didn't even spin up.
so i took the casing off and tried plugging it in with the SATA power and data transfer cables (don't know the names) and the hard drive still didn't work, didn't even spin up.
but one thing i did notice, is that i had it in the PC for about 3 minutes before turning the PC off, and i touched the PCB of the hard drive that connects the connectors to the inside (only a little PCB and it was smooth) but it was really hot, to the point i couldn't keep my fingers on the PCB for more than a couple of seconds.
can someone explain what has happened, it hasn't been dropped or anything and hardly gets moved around.
does anyone know how to fix it or get it to work.
im thinking of taking the hard drive apart and have a look if it anything inside.
any idea's.
thanks in advance
