I mean it sounds like you went into this without understanding what resolution actually is? Without additional texture resolution, all monitor resolution does is reduce the size of the pixels, and so reduces aliasing. If you do have the high res textures, though, and have particle effects the additional detail is there. That said, if you only have a 1440p display a Titan X is a complete waste of money. You should have got a 1080 for around half the price.
Your last point is completely wrong for PC. Games will render at whatever resolution you set them to. The PS4 Pro uses checkerboard upscaling to appear 4K because it isn't powerful enough, but PC games running at 4K are 4K native.

Firstly I don't have a Titan XP. What I was saying there was that the Titan XP is really the only GPU on the market today that can put up a decent fight at 4k. Yes yes, supposedly the Titan XM could do it with older games (and the 980ti) but I don't consider barely scraping the minimums and maxing out in the 30s as "enough".
I bought 4k when it literally first came out. So I was running two Titan Blacks. It was so so with SLi support but then SLi took a nose dive and I was left struggling.
I then wasted more money on GPUs and god knows what else before throwing in the towel. I understand how it works perfectly thanks, but I found that 4k with no AA did not look better enough to warrant all of that GPU horsepower. So I dropped to 1440p, no more headaches or performance issues.
I can also tell you that some games looked barely any better, if any better at 4k. Placebo and all of that. I thought I may actually suffer dropping to 1440p but it seems I shouldn't have worried.

Oh, and some games looked worse at 4k. By the time you reduced the settings enough to get a decent smooth gaming experience they actually looked worse than 1440p maxed out because of the gargantuan hit your GPUs take at 4k shoving around all of those extra pixels.
