Hi i got a hard drive today for my bros pc and it continuously makes a noise like its being assessed all the time the hard drive is working fine and sounds like all my other hard drives when they are being used or read or writing but this one never stops doing it its not really loud or anything or unusual noise.

if its maxtor this is a normal occourance

otherwise, depends on the drive.

if the drive is nearing capacity, "superfetch" (a win7 system service), will continuously try to rearrange the data on the HDD for the best performance. the algorithm it uses is not perfect.

i suggest a complete defrag of the drive.

also, before defragging, delete any useless data (temp/tmp directories, temporary internet files, etc).... this can be done with the disk cleanup tool found in accessories/system tools

it only just had a clean install of windows 7 from a format its a Seagate NL35 ST3250824NS ( 250 GB, SATA II, 8 MB) HDD.
