Hard drive writing speed issue

I`ve got a pc with 2 harddrives setup in Raid0 (can`t give the model numbers atm cos a checking program is running).

The problem is that when u write to the array, it starts bursting @ 20-40 something m/s, then after a few seconds drops down to as low as 256kb/s - and stays there, perhaps fluctuating up to 1.5m/s.

Reading from it seems to be fine.

I`ve run the likes of HDTach, as it was one of the only things on the desktop, and the speeds it shows are in excess of 100m burst, averaging at something like 56m, short and long tests. I really expected it to give very low results, but it didn`t.

Could it be anything to do with strip size being not liked by the drivers ?

I`ve tried giving them power from other sources, just incase they lacked power from the system as a whole, but the same results occured.

EDIT: Also I`ve put 2 different harddrives in the same situation (different models) and they work great, average 20-30m/s.

Ugh wouldn`t u believe it, the newest drive I`ve bought turns out to be a duff one.

WD2000JS-00SGB0 Caviar SE

I tried them unstripped and singled out the drive, then tried switching ports just to make sure it wasn`t a mobo/port/lead problem, and the issue followed whatever the drive was plugged into.

It`s twin acts perfect. Now I gotta see if I can get an exact replacement.

RMA`d the drive, got a new one back today (not tested yet).

Just under 2 week turnaround, thats a long time in my books.

I keep about 20 disks active in raid arrays and I have one go bad every other month. A two week turnaround is about average. Seems like failures happen a lot more often on new disks... I blame shipping abuse
