I don`t know if something already exists out there, if it does - please linky it. But I`m thinking of a device with any type of chained connection to u`r pc, via straight to mobo or an external connection. It`s seen by the pc as 1 device, or drive. And inside the unit is/are a selection of drive bays, with either/and/or SATA, IDE, SCSI connectors. What u would do is take any bunch of miscellaneous drives u have lying around the house:
ATA100 200g
ATA133 80g
ATA100 80g
ATA130 300g
Chuck them in this unit. Obviously I`d understand that it`s sync to the slowest speed, and be further limited by it`s means of connection to the pc, but it would take the capacities of the drives and present to the user what looks like a single drive with the capacity that is the sum of the contents. We`re not talking raid/jbod or anything fruity, just added up and look like 1 to the pc.
Effectively u`d have a ATA100 660g drive from the above (b4 formatting).
I read somewhere of a theory of something like this being looked at for SATA, but is anything out there now ? Especially ide related, although I s`pose u could mod it to have ide->sata adaptorssss....
