Im sure we all no bout the acoustic management on sum (defaulted on on most) maxtor drives
The inherent problem is they have a utility called AMSet to control this performance reducing 'feature' this is good but its has a problem which is that it hasnt been updated since feb 2002 - so new chipsets/ sata and other thing in line with nu systems disables its functionality;
so if u have a relativley nu system u cant diaable the acoustic management
BUT IBM has a tool (which worked with my Maxtor DM10 SATA) which is upto date and works with (from reports) most drives - it also has other performance boosting benefits
