I think with a machine in a different class to my previous machines it's time for a new name and this time it's in honour of my favourite author who passed away this year :(

So, what are the specs?

17.3" Gloss 90% Gamut Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™i7 4930K
16GB SAMSUNG 1600MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (4 x 4GB ) (type YK0 overclockable)
2 x NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 780M - 4.0GB GDDR5
512GB OCZ Vector + 750GB WD SCORPIO BLACK
Sony optiarc bluray drive
Intel 7260AC wireless
4 x USB 3.0 PORTS + 3 USB 3.0 (flush expresscard) + 2 x USB 2.0 PORTS
78.44WH Lithium Ion Battery
2x 330W AC Adaptor + multi brick adaptor

So that's all well and good, but what exactly will I be doing with a notebook to make it worthy of being a project?

The first step is a repasting of all the heatsinks, i'll also be using high performance thermal pads which I will adjust to be the right height so that the heatsinks make the best possible contact.

The second step is replacing all the firmware with custom unlocked files, that will allow me to adjust GPU voltage and clocks along with the system bios that will allow me to overclock the CPU and adjust voltages/power limits along with memory frequencies and timings.

The next step is of course overclocking the thing. That goes for the CPU/GPU but also the LCD which I hope to get 90-100hz out of.

I'll also be replacing the stock keyboard with my the one from my old MSI machine, it will need a little trimming in places but that's what a dremmel is for.

Overall I intend to take it from a very fast machine to one that will stand alongside most desktops for compute :)

For now here are some stock photographs for those not familiar with the 570WM:

The machine is currently awaiting to be shipped tomorrow (monday) and reach me before noon the next day.

Always interested to see a build log for a laptop!
From the second pic it looks like it's going to be somewhat on the heavy side?

I think you've just described the meaning of decent laptop there, this things is way more powerful than any laptop I've ever seen! :)

that thing isn't exactly compact at 9KG. oh well, whatever pleases you.

It's a lot more compact than a rig, monitor, keyboard and mouse.

It may be bigger and heavier than your usual laptop but at least it can be taken anywhere and played on your lap... Unless of course 9kg is too heavy for you, which at this point anyone who feels 9kg is even noticeable needs to eat more

It can't be too easy carrying it around by the handle though, if you have other bags and things with you can it? Things don't have to be that heavy to be a pain to carry, like your arms start aching when you're carrying things round for a long time that aren't even that heavy

mouse? you really want to play without a mouse?

also, playing with that thing on your lap? sure. enjoy your burnt legs

i just don't see the point in carrying that thing with you, the only reason anyone would need that is maybe editing on the go, other than that it's just heavy, expensive and hot.

Well this will be interesting to watch :D.

I'd get one if I needed to move around more than the occasional LAN trip. IF you have to go places alot I see the need for it although I have to say it's still a tad pricey.

thats kinda insane. i have to say i dont think i would like to use a laptop that weighed 3 babies and got super hot. im pretty sure people can go sterile from the laptop cooking their junk.

I'm sorry but what? It's a serious gaming machine/work station that I can also use to browse the web on my lap. Keep up.

but it's also 3 times the pricetag. when i buy a laptop i buy it for mobility, 9KG isn't mobile to me and without the batteries it isn't mobile at all anymore. you must be travelling a lot and render a lot in different locations to really need that thing, that's not an everyday laptop.

Meaker just ignore SeekaX - he will ALWAYS find something to argue about for the sake of an argument, it's starting to get boring.
