[Guide] Backup and restore your COD4 Profile

As most of you probably know, COD4 profiles are stored locally for some silly reason. That means any corruption, format or w/e will result in you having to restart...unless you backup.

To backup:

Backup the folder called "players" in your COD4 directory

C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\

Note: You have to use the same key (you would do normally surely?)

To restore in XP:

Simply plonk it back in the same place, ensuring the folder in players\profiles which should be your username, matches the text inside the active.txt else it will not work

In vista it is different...I have just learnt...

C:\Users\"USERNAME"\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 4 - Modern Warfare\players\ would be its situation...do the same as above only at this location.

To backup in Vista just backup from the location above and restore using either method

Profile Reset

Thanx for the info mrapoc,

dunno if this is too late for me or what...

I had to restart the game in safe mode which in turn made my profile to reset.

Now i did not backup any folder as you mentioned.

my question is :

Is it possible for me to resume the game at the same stage i was on at the time of powercut?

cuz right now it shows me the all the ACTs i have played but they are all greyed out.. any way i can continue where i left or do i have to restart all over again ? : /

The game starts in safe mode?

I should say just starting the game normally will cure it

If not, follow my instruction to back it up

Uninstall the game

Run ccleaner (both clean and registry)

Restart and install/run the game

I have restarted the pc and the game few times now,

It doesnt give me the Safe mode error anymore.

in the SELECT MISSION tab it displays all the ACTs tht i completed earlier but they r all greyed out now and only the tutorial is available for play.

Now i guess i will copy the profile and reinstall the game after clean and hope it gets me back where i was ...

if there is something else i can do please do tell.

If not restart it again. It may help.

See if your able to find the copy of the profile as above.

I found out this the hard way. After a re-fromat I found myself at level 1 . I ended up using a cheat which takes me up to the top level (I wasnt that far off anyway).

I assumed the levels are stored online, otherwise I thought they would be easily manipulated - Which evidently they are...

well, post what you do have ;D

to backup multiplayer your looking for is <username>.cfg. Where as for single player you need the save games folder.

This is from memory tho.

Vista is different than xp for game saves. Take a look in your documents. There may be a folder called My Games
