GTX580 Sli

ok it seems like you know what youre talking about so I will shut up now. I already ordered it so its no use :(

Just to get this straight but 1.5GB card + 1.5GB card = 1.5GB effective VRAM. It does not double.

that is something I didn't know

You will be fine

All it means is you may find the odd situation where you can not turn the settings up as high as you would like. For the money you have paid it is still a good upgrade.

I still use a pair of GTX 590s which also have 1.5gb of vram per GPU and they still have no problem running everything.

Mind if I quote that and put it in my sig..?

Its not like I invented it, do what you want mate :)

*for anyone reading that post was as sarcastic as it gets :P

Edit: lol just saw an ex display 560ti 1gb for 215eu on malta's scan website, oh the irony.

Im kind of in the same boat, I have a 580 and looking for an upgrade. I would probably get another 580 but I don't have space on my mobo. Is it worth getting another p67/z77 mobo just to get another 580?

It would probably be cheaper to sell your GTX 580 and upgrade to a HD 7950 or GTX 670

Upgrade GTX580 on HD7950 not worth.
7950 is little stronger but looking smoother gameplay on Fermi that is barely visible or not at all. gtx580 worth only on GTX680 or GTX780.
Example I would rather use some models of GTX580 with 3GB Video Memory than HD7950. That is 10% stronger card.
Example 580 Classified 3GB OC on some 950-1000MHz fly as rocket compare with non stop driver problems on AMD. Flickering, microstuttering, lag,...AMD launch last official driver in April.

just got the 580, brand new and has ac3 with it, it is currently sitting on the chair beside me at work, 4 more hours to go :)

now that I installed both cards in the system, it obviously has to give me some shit and hard time before working properly. I tested the new card alone and went through the benchmarks perfectly fine. as soon as i installed them in sli, as soon as I ran the benchmarks the screen started tearing up with green artifacts (like the ones when you record a monitor with a camera) then I reseated them and tested again. then it crashed the system within a few minutes, changed the sli bridge and now its giving me blue artifacts (like the one above).

sli is enabled via the control panel, physx is set on one of the cards, all of them have power (no adaptors), now I'm going to sleep before i throw the case out the window.

Okay for SLi dude you have to completely clean out the drivers and drivercleaner it without the sli bridge on (or just with one card) then install them exactly how you want them (so with sli bridge). And do a completely fresh driver install.

Sounds weird but it caught me out when i was a card short.

Don't forget the bridge either, that screws the driver install as well. Don't ask me how/why. But it does.

thanks for your help, I'll try it out now, you may just have saved a pc from domestic abuse :PPPP

good luck

although they do seem better now, i tried 3d mark vantage and I found an error when i came back, and stone giant isn't even launching. I'll play some more with it when i have some free time later today

SuB, they seem to be working fine, played tomb raider for a good 1 hour this morning without a hitch. I seem to have a problem with Physx though, stone giant doesn't launch, 3d mark vantage crashes as soon as it gets the physx test and tomb raider starts f'ing up a little when her hair is loading and stuff, didn't have any of these with one card.

I am thinking that once I finish tomb raider I will do a fresh install of windows. Just for the record Sli is set to "maximise 3d performance" and physx is set to Geforce GTX580 (2).

I normally use Auto select in the NVidia control panel for PhysX.

update : apart from the physx thing, which will be fixed after formatting the pc, after finishing tomb raider, i was having some heat issues, the top card was hitting 83 degrees and sounded like a jet plane. So i thought I would give it a try running it in the 1st and 3rd slots giving the top card some room to breath, and it works perfectly, temps dropped by about 10 degrees and I only lost like 2 fps on heaven benchmark so I'm happy now :) they are now running at 16x and 4x.

I'm only waiting for the last pci-e power extension to arrive and I can finally do some proper cable managment, and a sexier sli bridge, imo the 3 way one is too bulky and I hate how it looks.

Glad to hear its running smoothly, the 2 way sli bridge on some bends you could have a look at that. and with your bench marking is that also not down to inconsistencies you sometimes get?
