Nvidia has already confirmed that the GTX 1060 is based on GP-106.

TBH if it was based on GP-104 Nvidia would be disabling half of the full GPU, kinda wasteful TBH.

Of course the 1060 is based on GP 106. However, as I said before in order to make those they would literally have to stop making 104s because of the poor yield situation (which is obvious looking at stock levels).

So, why would Nvidia stop making a card that costs hardly any more than one they will sell at half the price?

As such some of the cards that have gone out to reviewers are cut off 104 dies, not 106.

I've also said that this would be a vapor launch because of the above facts about supply issues and so on.

However, it kind of shows just how greedy they are being with the 1080 and 1070 if they can, like you say, afford to just lop a lump off to make review cards.

They are not, you can't put a GP 104 die on a GP-104 PCB, it isn't that simple mate.

It is likely that Nvidia could have been trying to make a GTX 1060Ti, or at least considering it. If there are yield issues some of the failed 1070/1080 GPU dies could be used there.

Nothing stops Nvidia from making GP 104 and 106 at the same time, Nvidia are not stopping 1070 and 1080 production for the 1060, that is a silly idea.

TSMC have tonnes of fab space to make both. It is not a one or the other situation.
