Gtx 980 - base clock throttle

Hello. I just buy my new reference Gtx 980. But i have a problem i think. Because when temps go to 81c, core clock is decreasing from 1256mhz to 1126 base clock. And running like 1126-1150mhz. Is this normal or something bad with card? I was thinking that core clock in games will be always above BOOST CLOCK ( 1216mhz and above). In my situation core clock while gaming and benchmarking is throttling to 1126mhz <-- base clock.
I think its not supposed to drop to base clock just from hitting 81 C .It should only drop a bin or two. What you think? RMA that card?
Is this a issue? thx for reply and support.

Nvidia cards will boost until they reach 81c then it'll reduce clocks until its stable temp wise. Atleast thats how my 780Ti works.

No, that makes sense to me as that is what my card does as well.

-edit- infact it goes past the boost clock until it hits 81c.

The card sounds like its working properly but there must be a bit of an underlying cooling issue for it to keep hitting 81c? Or should I say if you tried hard enough you could keep it from falling off boost, I used to find one of my reference 780's would hit 81 in a hot case. Marginally more aggresive fan profiles might keep it performing optimally. Which card have you got and whats your cooling setup like? Any scope for improvement?

Question though OP, how are you managing to get your GPU to those temps on those clocks anyways? I have mine in tri-sli and the case doesnt have great airflow and they are still boosting to 1392Mhz on the core sometimes even higher before 2 of them hit the 81c wall. My ambient temps are ~26c during these tests. Sometimes even higher thanks to heating.

try listing full rig spec and a pic of the case, mite help people hear help you out. Sounds like a rig cooling fault to me not the card
