Just a thought, but:
The 800M series was already out, using gm1xx chips.
There still was no 800 series for desktops, but the gm2xx was ready. To avoid a mixup and comparison problems between e.g. 880 and 880M the 800 desktop series was skipped.
At least that sounds more logical than just "going straight to 900 so people think they are 2 gens behind with their 780".
