Hello everyone, this is my first post so if its out of place or something dont kill me lol

So as the title says, i have a Zotac GTX680, reference pcb/cooler and in some applications it does this f*cking annoying high pitched sound which is probably coil whine. Applications where its most noticeable : 3D mark 11, sometimes in Battlefield 3 and Folding@Home ( Which is what im running at the video )

Here is a link to a video that i made

(Believe in real life that is unbearable for me, im a sound freak so that pisses me off)

I am sure that, that sound does not come from anywhere else so its definitely the GPU, Do all 680's have this sound or am i just the lucky one?

Thanks

Happens a lot on high end GPUs, some are worse than others and there isn't really anything you can do apart from get it changed if you can.

Enabling Vsync might help whislt gaming though because what causes it it excessive frame rates and by enabling Vsync it will limit the FPS to 60 and should prevent the coil whining.

Ohh well that sucks, though my problem is just with Folding@Home cause there i cant limit anything cause yeah.. duh plus im folding for the awesome 98860 team!

I get the same issue only on folding.

I minimised it by overclocking the card which increased the pitch making it less audible

I don't get that with my card and folding. That's really all my card has been doing besides when I first got it and ran benches.

Will try it but for me i think itll just be worse

Lucky! btw just a quick question, how did you get your 680 to fold? you had manually edit/copy..etc to get it to work no?

"Generally" I find the noises go when I play with the way the power is sourced. Switch the pcie connectors around or use other ones, or use the adapters or whatever.

Just means that the regulators on the card are working differently. Different source, difference in the regulation required.

I wouldn't be able to handle the noise either. Can you exchange the card?

Yeah i think i can but ive just way too many things to do right now so, soon

Yeah will try that now, ive a Corsair HX850 which is a really good PSU so we ll see if that does the trick!

Tried switching the connectors and all that, and the sound is still there

It depends on what I am running. My 680 wines when I am benching only. and even then you cannot here it unless the door is off. Don't worry about it unless those whines get louder and start clicking. But a whine on high end electrical anything is normal.

Dont know how loud the sound comes of in the video, but in real life i cant stand it, and it does also click. I will return it to the shop, yes in games i cant really hear it but i do want to fold as well and i dont believe that, that sound should occur.

The clicking is concerning. But if you plan on returning back high end equipment that uses electricity because of a slight whine, you will live a miserable life. All high end equipment makes a whine some louder than others. I would be more concerned if it didn't whine a little while running an excruciating intense application such a folding, as this could mean your GPU is not receiving proper power.

hahah lol +1 for the miserable life, that is true unfortunately, my hearing is almost perfect any sound that is just baaaaaarely audible , will piss me off and yeah, its not good but i cant help it, has to perfect!

Weird thing is, in folding@home, the card only draws 60%(more or less) power, so im guessing that the sound comes from a specific part of the card being extremely active ( my guess ). All the previous graphics cards i had, did have coil whine too but not THAT loud, i just cant support this

Can you do me a favor and run the fans @ 100% (or close to) and say if the whine/click goes away ?

(few tests going on that may point towards the fans whining rather than regulators)

.. obviously you'll have to percivier over the fan itself being a tad louder

well i stopped the fan once and the noise was still there so

I have the same problem with my palit gtx 470 and it is very annoying. MSI cards use solid chokes which apparently eliminates the possibility of coil whine, so I think I'll buy my next card from msi.
