I have had my 550 for just under 2 years and it died i cannot RMA it cause its out of warranty. My computer only has a Athlon X2 6400+ with 4 gb of ram so until I get enough money to build a new computer im stuck with what I have. I was thinking about getting either a ATI Radeon HD 6850 or a ATI Radeon HD 5850. Im not sure what is best for my computer and I dont want to spend more than $150.

attempting to reflow my 550 in the oven. :/

HD 6850 imo, sure the HD 5850 is faster (slightly) however 6850 is newer tech, and should use less power. l have just picked up a cheap GTX 560ti to rebuild my media center with a i3 3220 as l was not happy with my 5800k + 6670 build.

If you shop about you should find a bargain.

However try a reflow first as it will only cost the lecky for running the oven :)

The 5850 uses a bit more power and is also faster, and the 6850 uses a lil bit less power and it's a lil bit slower. Now if you care about power and heat and that you could sacrifice a bit of performance to save some power, you'd go with the 6850. if not.. you would go with the 5870.

will my cooler master 500W handle a 5870? I don't really care about power consumption but with my processor also using 125W I don't want to have to buy a better power supply.

Well the 5870 uses about 190 Watts so it might work but it also might not. So if you get a bigger power supply the strain on it will be smaller and the ripple will be below its limits and therefore you components will live longer. But you have the power to decide.
