gtx 260 audio

ok now this is driving me crazy now, i wanted to hook my 260 up to my lg 37" tv to watch movies and pos play games on sometimes, i thought it would be easy

so i got a 5M dvi > hdmi cable, already had an audio cable so when it got here plugged it all in and started setting it up, got the pic up fine on the tv, then went to put on a film to see the quality of it and there was no sound.

so i looked into the problem and found it was as the hdmi was making the tv want audio through that cable, sure enough i unplugged the hdmi and the sound cam through fine, found a driver hack that was supposed to stop the gpu telling the tv that audio was coming with the hdmi but it didnt work.

so i thought ok i will get a sound card and hook it up to the gpu as im currently only using on-board sound, this is where the problem hit, i was looking at getting the X-Fi Xtreme Gamer as it seems like a good card and was very interested in the CMSS-3D.

now comes the problem, my card didnt come with a S/PDIF Audio Cable, i have looked everywhere to try and find one, the only thing i can find is on ebay from the states, im in the uk and really really could do some help with trying to locate one of these cables or an alternative to connect the S/PDIF from the sound card to the gpu so i can get some sound on my pc.

sorry for the life story but hopefully is can show how much i have tried looking into this before having to ask for help, so thanks in advance that can offer any help/advice on this. :worship:

HDMI is picture and audio so your TV will expect audio to come from the GTX 260.

There is a audio port on the 260 itself.

Your MB should have an audio out on the board that you can plug it in to.

If not then you can use the internal output off the sound card.

Yeah u can buy the cable in a few places these days, but I'm not 100% sure it'll solve ur problem. I myself got this working without even trying on a Vista 32bit install. On moving to a 64 bit install, it worked at first, then decided to go into cut-out mode where it was more irritating than useful. I personally think it's cos the 64 bit drivers, as with most things, are botched 32 bit versions, that panic when u have 4g. IMO.

It'd be handy to know what hardware u have exactly, mobo etc, but it's meant to be a piece of pish to get this working as it should.

This is a link to what I saw Scan selling recently. The little white curled up "wire" is usually the thing u need, depending on ur setup.

yep thats the little bugger i need, i have everything else exept for the sound card which i hope to be getting tommorow.

my system is based on a evga 650i mobo, unfortunatly it has the area for S/PDIF but they are blank solders with no pins so i cant connect it to on-board.

im hoping getting the sound card will sort this out, but its getting a hold of one of the S/PDIF wires that seems to be the prob

U can also use the phono-style spdif of the onboard if it`s there, they tend to have a hole next to them so u can re-route it back inside the case.

oo thats a handy find might pickup that cable, (expensive) at some point in the future, spdif can only carry 5.1 though right? hdmi can carry 7.1 though.. does anyone know if you can push 7.1 through to the graphics card for output via hdmi? or are you limited to the 5.1 of spdif (bloody annoying if you ask me)

Didn`t know u could do 7.1 over hdmi. I guess u would have to check the version of the thing receiving the hdmi cable, the cable itself, and what`s sending the signal. Think what I got is 1.3 at receiving and cable, not sure what the mobo was sending. On the likes of the IP35 Pro there is a sound option in the bios for HD or AC97 for panel `stuff`.

I`m sure some gfxcard manufacturers just sell that little wire thing seperately for less. Check MSI, XFX etc etc. Or maybe Kustompc etc, eBuyer perhaps.

U`d be surprized how many manufacturers dont supply either of them, I mentioned this some time last year.

A good number of the cards don`t have the spdif connector pins soldered on !

It just seems that in all these cases it`s hard to find an excuse as to "why the hell not ?!?!".

well exactly why the hell not, these things must cost pennies to make!

well for now i have made my own lead and connected it up, not the best but its doing its job and i now have sound on my tv :rocker:
