Gta 5 pc retail copys takes up 7 discs

It looks like the PC retail version of GTA 5 will require you to use 7 disks. Would any of you want to see a transition to Blu- Ray disks or to stay on the aging DVD format.

Oh God it looks so good though even though its seven disks. I tend to buy all my games as disk based versions, well at least on PS4 anyway but I always buy digital on PC, but honestly wouldn't mind getting the 7 disks for this.

I have pre-ordered the retail copy, but I hope it contains a steam code as I don't have a DVD drive :/

I set mine onto Steam pre-load at the first opportunity to let my poor old ADSL line struggle with it!

Given that so few people use disc-based installs now, and so few people have blu-ray readers, I have to say I'd be surprised. Not saying that there wouldn't be a market for it, only that when you consider it as a venn diagram, that group in the middle is looking very, very small.

Retail copy is a Rockstar Social Club code IIRC, which is downloadable - not Steam though.

Cheers jim. I think I'll cancel the pre-order. I much prefer to have only a few places to download my stuff. Don't need a dedicated launcher, it really annoys me when I clean install, which is what I do regularly.

I don't need the list to e longer. Uplay, Origin and Steam is enough for me right now. Might try GOG though.

Why the fuck didn't they also do a Bluray copy?

I imagine in due course they'll pass out steam codes for the social thing, we'll see.

GTA 5 still needs the rockstar social application regardless of where you or how you get it though. If anything having it stand alone so you dont run 2 clients sounds better then having to run steam to run social thing and then launch gta 5, better to just have 1 launcher.

Who here has a blu ray player in the pc? the pc market isnt ready for blu ray and i doubt it will ever switch over.

Who here has a optical drive regardless of DVD or BluRay ;)

the pc hype is almost becoming as great as the run up to the games release on xbox360 and ps3 "years" ago.

I have a little external dvd burner ready for gta retail. Although if the code allows me to download from rockstar, thats fine to.

I do, and I said 'also', remember how this happened with CD's and DVD's when they sold a version of both (Battlefield 2 comes to mind). This would be a perfect segway into that. A bluray reader drive isn't that expensive now at all.

Amazon listing states that the Steam code comes in the box ;) not bad at all for £34.

That same listing says "Not supported by steam." and "Grand Theft Auto V is physical boxed item and hence it is not activated on steam". I'm only parroting what I've heard, but that's the line I've seen elsewhere on the web - that the only Steam compatible version, for the moment, will be that sold via Steam.

As for the previous comment about it still needing Rockstar Social Club - that's true, but a) Steam will download through Steam's servers, which I trust more than uPlay/Origin/RSC etc and b) Steam will handle the installation of the client and keep the game files together, which I find useful.

But obviously everyone has their own take on it.

Hmeh, most PCs don't have Blu-Ray players. Like the biggest part of the market is people that buy cheap pre-builds that don't have them, and even under enthusiasts like us optical drives are disappearing completely.

When I bought Mafia II it included a disk, but the keycode for activation was also a Steam key that I could enter in Steam directly and just download it off there without needing the disc. I'd say that was a pretty good solution, even if it kinda puts Steam into more of a monopoly position than they already are.

Otherwise I'd say switch to USB 2.0 sticks. Faster than DVDs, not that expensive and every PC has USB ports. Plus they'd easily fit in a standard sized game/DVD box as they are now.

I have a Blu Ray drive, but why not USB 3.0 stick, I could do with one ;)

Yeah I just checked and as a consumer (so including taxes and retailer profit margin) I can buy a USB 2.0 8GB stick for €3.60 or a USB 3.0 one for €4.17

Can't imagine this would be too expensive for game developers, especially when they will be cheaper for them to buy than for me as a consumer.

You need to take into consideration that the production line for dvd/b-ray is already in place, they would need to start again redesigning a new production line and dvd's they get for pennies more profit for them

Yes, but eventually businesses are going to realize that DVD players are a thing of the past, especially with online movie streaming and rental now being more popular than ever, and usually cheaper than their physical equivalent.

Then computer manufacturers will shave off some cost by not putting them into systems anymore (cheaper laptops already do this). But as long as neither parties (either the ones that make DVDs or the ones that play them) make this move, we will be stuck with this outdated, slow, and inconvenient media.

You make a fair point on the cost in changing the production process though.

Unless you are like me and won't be getting this game, played it on xbox one, all hype. Was pretty boring tbh.. so now i don't need to worry about the 7 disks or the downloads;)

Yeah i'm crapping my pants over this because I had to spend 13 minutes downloading a file while I sat on my PC doing other things. It ruined the game for me
