Gray's 2HP Autocascade

Thought I'd post the Autocascade project I'm working on here. now that the cascade is done and put away, time to move on...

2HP L'Unite Hermetique/Tecumseh compressor

Henry Oil Sep and Home made phase sep

DII heat exchanger 1/2 Ton

Chilly1 evap

Homemade SLHX

SS suction line

R290/R23 gasses

I'll post the work so far as it's almost done, just a suction line to splice in, and the captube to run.

I had to take out the top and bottom row from the condensor as the lines got too damaged suring shipping overseas, but it's still got a lot of capacity to it, and should be fine.

Used a sporlan catch all on the Low stage, and a KMP filter on the High, because I had 'em kickin' around.

DII HX on there from my fist cascade that the compressor was bust on.

Like I said, just the suction to put in, and the captube, and I can start testing it. Once I've seen some results and I'm sure it 100%, I'll install the HX box and insulate.

I really like how compact it's turning out, consider how large and heavy the compressor is.

I just need to decide what to do with the suction line. I may end up putting a 1/4" line to restrict the suction of the Low stage to give the high stage a little boost, but I'm really not sure if I will yet.

Cheers

 Thats massive!!! How tall is that compressor?

Please forgive the noobness but do all those pipes have to be a specific length for optimisation?

:D

I can't remember exactly, but I think it's about 15" tall. When I check the leaktest tomorrow I'll measure it again and check for you. It weighs 28kg though, and it's every bit as heavy as you'd think.

The lines on an autocascade are even harder to balance than on a single or cascade, cos you're running 2 partial stages, but with the accumulators on both sides, and the slhx as well, I think I'm pretty close to a good balance as I'm gonna get.

Really hoping this will do -75 like my Cascade does, but I really won't know until it's up and running. My supplier had run out of the captube I need, and I'm going to order a suction line for it as well instead of splicing the shorter one's I've got here.

Can't wait to see it run, it should be something!

LOL I haven't yet, but as soon as I've got a mobo for the 3000 venice, I'm going to have a play with the cascade on it.

I use a 'dummy load' on them to test that it would work like on a cpu, and it's a little hotter than the 3000 venice fully clocked and high vcore, but no quite what the 4800 X2 ran.

I'm looking forward to it though, I've run many a single stage freezer, but never anything colder than -50.

Looks a beast how much does it weight?I thought the old mach was heavy that must be a 2 man job to move!

you now must ahve more phase units lying around than any other person!!!

Ummm I'm afraid to weigh it :o

I moved it myself, but I really wished I'd had help lol and that was before I added all the plumbing and stuff. It should be 40kg or close to it now I would think, maybe a touch more.

I don't really have all that many compared to the likes of Mr. Stanbridge or the other guys that sell 'em, but considering having 2 phase units is unusual for any computer users (not couting the beer fridge) then I guess maybe I do have a little problem with phase addiction ;)

Impressive stuff Mr Mole. Just how loud is that fan though?? hehe Looking forward to the results. 17kg Mach IIs are heavy enough (when you have to move 20 one after the other.) I cant imagine a 40kg workout.

Yeah, it's a heavy beast.

I had to carry the Cascade out to carry that one into the shop and I thought the cascade was pretty heavy but the Auto's compressor felt heavier on it's own lol

Actually that fan is really quiet. Not 'silent' but a lot quieter than the 15cm fan on the cascade. It's a good match for the size of the condensor though, so it's not needed to be so powerful. I can't remember the speed but I think the motor does about 2500 rpm so it's not a whiney fan.

I think the noise of the compressor and the fan should be pretty matched, but until I can pipe in the rest of the capline and suction I won't know for sure.

This is definitely not a unit you'd want to move very often. I'm struggling to find castors that are rated for the weight that aren't huge and ugly lol

When the box to house this in is made, I'll definitely have some rollers though.

Imagine unloading a truck full of these hehehe you wouldn't have that fat avatar for very long! :p

I got asked about how the plumbing is set up so this is the 'map'

Compressor -> accumulator -> Oil Sep -> Condensor -> Phase Sep (no copper wool inside) -> 1st and 2nd stages

High Stage: Bottom of phase sep -> Sporlan filter/dryer -> 5.5' captube -> bottom of outer HX port -> top of outer HX port -> Outer tube of SLHX at bottom -> Suction accumulator -> compressor

Low stage: Top of Phase Sep -> Inner tube of SLHX at top -> Top of inner HX port -> Bottom of inner HX port -> KMP filter/dryer -> Captube 2 meters Wrapped up and around the suction flexi to the Evap -> Suction flexi -> Suction side and back to compressor same as the High stage.

Hope that helps a bit, cos it's a maze in there.

Cheers

I can't decide on how to put the box together yet.

I'm not sure whether to go with a really long suction line so you'd do your benching on the table, or to go a little shorter and put the mobo on the unit itself.

It's likely gonna get a fairly long suction though 0.6m or so, then it's just beside the mobo instead of on top.

Likely just a square box, but I'm not gonna install it into the box until the unit's properly tested, but I want to get out to the store to get the wood I need and start making it up though, I just don't want to build it and have to make major changes if I change how I'm gonna configure it.

Cool project Gray, that compressor is a beast, 2HP!!!!

Should be interesting to see the results from this, i love the engineering on autocascades.

G

hehehe

me too, I'm itching to try it, but it's up to the supplier when they get more .031" captube in stock damit lol

I vacced for an hour last night, and it's held all night and day so it's ready for the last bits to go on, but I have to wait.

I'll be trying the other cascade as soon as I get another mobo to kill errr to 'test' with the 3000 Venice I have, so hopefully soon I'll see what it's capable of.

Tuesday I should see captube and maybe even the new suction line for it, so I should be rockin' by the middle to end of week. If I can't get captube by then, I'll sweet talk Fatty into sellin' me some hehehe

I talked my wife into lettin' me finish this one cos I'm planning on selling it to try to cover costs. I've got another 2 1/4HP compressor the same as this one, so if it works as well as I think, I can make another one anyways. That's the only reason I'm 'allowed'. besides, if I can recover some cash, I can buy more parts to keep the wheels turning and not have to go sell my wrinkly butt on the street for phase gear :o
