graphics issue and it gets worse

not sure if im posting in the right section but i need some help please, for a while now when i press the switch at the wall socket the pc made a kind of "popping electric noise" for a split second but i've just been ignoring it, so a few days ago i took the graphics card out of the motherboard to clean the dust, i unscrewed the plastic cover and vacuumed the heatsink then re assembled it and put it back in the desktop, then i tried a video game and it restarted the computer...i tried a less graphically intensive video game and it was fine, but the next day it started to shutdown when windows was starting up and bluescreens of death. so i left the pc for a few days and today i turned it on and it shutdown immediately followed by a horrible electrical smell and it popped a fuse in the fuse box downstairs. The motherboard and cpu is about 6 years old, but the graphics card is only about 3 years and the PSU is a good one (allegedly) from corsair.

EDIT, there is no power going to the motherboard (no green light) and it wont turn on.

sounds like a dead PSU have you a multimeter? if so unplug 24 pin to MB short green to black to bring PSU on if fuse stay's in check your voltages

hi mehere, i do not have a multimeter but i can borrow one from somebody, what do you mean by short green to black?

24-pin-atx-pinout.gif

take a wire or paper clip and link the green wire in pin 16 to one of the black wires that way you can start the psu without it needing to be connected to anything else
the fuse may go out straight away if not check the voltages as shown in the picture measuring from black(ground) to each pin in turn
but I have to say it is probably a dead psu and will pop the fuse straight away
24pinjump.gif

before putting money out on that just do the link trick as I think you will find the fuses go out straight away if not yes prongs in the 24 pin connector

alright thanks mate, i gotta go to work soon so ill try the paperclip when i get back and report back here with the findings, please stay tuned :)

sorry for the double post, hi mehere, i finally found the time to test it, i put the paper clip in the green and black wires and turned the psu on but nothing is happening, its not turning on and its not tripping the fuse box either, do i need to put it in a certain black wire or any?...any other ideas?

any black one mate comp won't start its not suppose to like this, have you and meter to measure the voltages? did the psu fan run?

i took the psu out of the computer case and had it plugged into the wall socket, and put the paper clip into the green and black wires on the 24pin connector, the fan didnt turn at all, i dont have a multimeter, i can borrow one on thursday though.

there is a very good chance its duff popping and smelling is never a good sign, meter will only prove it dead looks like your in the market for a new/second hand one

i think ill buy a psu tester, and im hoping that corsair will exchange it for me, if not, i will never buy another corsair product again!

you dont say how old the psu is, maybe you can return it but please dont let one problem put you off Corsair, they do some real nice kit

this psu cost around £100, i bought it from novatech in late 2009, so its gonna cost me over £30 to send it to the nearest corsair depot (netherlands) thats bulls***, i will never use crapsair again :cussing:

psus do deteriorate like most electrical components. corsair have a great warranty system. it is a hassle and it is expensive to send it to the netherlands i know i had to rma a ssd. but they will replace it as quick as possible with a refurb or new unit

ive googled this power supply and alot of people are saying theres a known fault with it and it causes it to have a shortened life span, they better replace this psu and pay for my postage :cussing:, i will wait to see what they have to say about it.

they wont pay for the postage. my ax1200 that cost me near 250 quid is loud as hell comes with a 7 year warranty but i still have to pay if i send it back

Well Mrspoon I've tried to help you what you do next or feel about Corsair is up to you, In my mind £100 and 4 years I can live with that works out 48p a week less than a newspaper so I'll leave you to it

Send a PM to the Corsair rep Grey_Beard:

He should be able to help you out with the postage costs.

Personally, I think the RMA policies should be clearer about postage. Nowadays included in every Corsair product you buy is a note saying 'return this product to Corsair directly, not the retailer'.
If something comes DOA then who's going to willingly choose to pay £30 to send it internationally, rather than just get the retailer to come and pick it up for free.
