GPU upgrade

Hi, so I've been looking at upgrading for a while now but can't quite come to a decision. I have a budget of upto around £250-300, but might go a bit further if it's worth it. I've been thinking of a 780 or 780ti due to the recent price cuts because of 900 series being released, and have been leaning over to the nVidia side of things just because of the current AMD cards not seeming too great compared to what I could get for the price.

I'm looking to be playing any upcoming games, as well as Battlefield, Skyrim, Crysis etc at 1080p.

My current setup:

AMD FX-6100
Sabertooth 900FX Rd
nVidia GT640
Corsair CX600M
8GB of Crucial Ballistix
All in a Coolermaster HAF 932 Advanced

Any help us appreciated,

Cheers! :)

You might want to change the cpu as well to something like an 8320 as well. That coupled with a 280x/770 would serve you well at 1080p.

There have been some very cheap 780's around, the DCUii was £230 briefly at OCUK but they are all gone now. Scan have the DCUii 780Ti for £339, ebuyer have a Twin Frozr 780 for £234. It just depends what deals you find and what coolers you like I guess, there are still some 7-series bargains to be had but it's not like the 9-series are outrageously priced.

For 1080p a 970/780 are a good choice but I guess some 780Ti overkill wouldn't hurt. 980 prices just don't make sense yet IMO.

The Twin Frozr is pretty tempting.. What about the KFA2 780 HOF and the Zotac 780Ti GHz? Both on OcUK, and really great prices, imo

I just put a posted a new thread as i found a egva gtx 780ti dual classified at Dabs for only £350, it was returned open unused so for £350 for a beast of a card is a no brainer.

For the budget your best bet will be to spend as much as possible on a GPU, then sort out your CPU upgrade later on. The GPU upgrade will give you the bulk of he performance increase which is what you want in the first place, and then later on the CPU will be the icing on the cake.

If you have an aftermarket CPU cooler I would also advise overclocking the CPU as far as it can go for the time being :)

I've seen the 780ti for £299 on overclockers I think. I'd also recommend the 970 or 780 if you can find one for good money. As far as the CPU goes, you'll see the biggest improvements with a better CPU in the older games such as Skyrim an other games that use DX9, were as in the DX11 games you'll see the bigger improvements with a better GPU.

I bought the Asus 970 Strix its such a lovely card but possibly not the best 970 overclocker as the single 8 pin restricts the power a bit if you want one to overclock go with the gigabyte 970 or Msi Gaming but if you think the 780 or 780 ti would suit your needs then go for that personally I wanted a card thats new out :)

As you are looking to play upcoming Games I would go for the 970 as it has 4gb of ram

I bought two Asus gtx 780 DirectCU II for $330 each.

Just an update, the Egva 780ti dual classified is now only £328, almost tempted to cancel my Egva 980 order and get the 780ti until nvidia release the 980ti or equivalent. What are the thoughts of other forum members.

If its much cheaper then it would be worth it. Otherwise not really. You're only playing at 1080p right now and tbh either card is way overkill so it doesn't really matter. The performance is slightly better on a 980 and you also get more Vram. Up to you to decide if that's worth it or not. Also should keep in mind a 980 will hold on to its resale value longer, since as you can see a 780ti didn't for long.
