Gigabyte X79S-UP5 and X79-UP4

Well, the specs seems pretty spectacular.

Seems to be firmware issues.

I have a UP4, and it is unstable in windows for some reason. Linux on a USB-stick works like a charm though, so I guess it is some kind of drive issue. The BIOS is very laggy and frustrating, a couple of times it has just plain frozen on me. No overclock or anything, running it with a Xeon E5-2643. There seems to be new BIOS in the works though, there are several beta versions.

My current setup has been running folding@home for several days now, and the VRM-heatsink isn't even warm to the touch. Overall the board seems to run very cool. A pity the firmware isn't up to snuff though. I'm planning on running a 3930K on it and overclock as much as possible in the future.

Wish me luck :D

You should have read reviews first......

When I bought the motherboard, there wasn't many reviews around. The sale was a month or so ago, the board has been on a shelf until last week. The reviews I found seemed happy with it. Always a bit of a gamble buying completely new stuff, I've had similar experiences before. And Gigabyte do say on their site that the CPU I use isn't supported with any other than the latest beta bios (F3n), might be a part of the problem...

Anyway, it will be interesting how it turns out. Not a very critical build, will probably be months in the making. Trying to find a good deal on a new CPU, the Xeon will probably go back to where it belongs soon.

The board is pretty gash. If you mention overclocking Ill laugh.

Its really not good and anyone that says its ok doesnt know what they are on about or are too scared to be honest.

Some of the reviews are utter BS. Its crap even on workstation standards.

Poor him!
I'm using 8 dimms of ram on that board, which means I wouldn't be able to overclock the CPU no mater what. And this board has actually handled 8 dimms better than my Rampage IV Extreme did. Couldn't get the R4E stable at 1866 on the memory, no matter what voltages I did. The Gigabyte board easily took 1866 on the memory, and is running stable.

Ive had 1866 running with 64GB mate. (8x8)
Well, maybe your chip is better than mine. But my point is that the R4E couldn't run the ram. I took the CPU and Ram out, and put it on the Gigabyte board, with the exact same voltages form the R4E. And the Gigabyte board worked. I can't explain how or why, but it works. And I'm just gonna let it be...

I'm using ASUS boards, since I'm building pcs and they never had any problems with handeling of anything.

Some of the reviews are utter BS.

There's a user over att Overclock and Tweaktown that has documented his problems with an UP5-board pretty well. Had lengthy conversations with Gigabyte about it. He got a "special" BIOS from Gigabyte to test, but no change. He mentioned talking to Anandtech about updating their review, but no. There are several others on the forums that have documented the throttling problem with the UP5. I saw one review mentioning this problem, most say nothing about it. It's a shame really. I think a big part of reviews are about that, call the manufacturers out on their BS.

It will be interesting to see how my UP4 fares. Still just a couple of reviews on that one, that in itself is a bad sign, he he. I think I'll aim for getting a CPU on the X-mas sales that's traditional around here. Stuff will hopefully happen in january :D
