Geforce 8 or 9 series with this build?

Forget the q9450, they don't clock particularly well and are held back by the low multi. Grab a g0 q6600 and clock it up.

The gx2 is a decent 'single' card solution, it can be a little erratic in crysis sometimes but handles every other game out there with ease. 24" monitor - you want some serious gpu power... There are new revisions coming out in the Summer with the new big bad ass nvidia card dropping late this year.

Is this rig a keeper or are you the kind of guy who likes to upgrade every few months?

Thinking of going for a Coolermaster Stacker 832 or a Black Cosmos S now for the case... i prefer the subtle look of the Stacker 832 to the cosmos though...

I'm happy to be a keeper or an upgrader it would all depend if I could shift the old stuff on Ebay which should be easy enough...

I'm wondering if my choice of the ASus Striker Extreme 790i is a bit extreme as I hadn't intended to SLI or use DDR3 ram as it's so expensive at the moment...

Any other suggestions

Can anyone suggest a good 24" monitor? Don't tell me Dell is the only way to go???

so dell monitors are the way to go are they??? I saw a very nice monitor on Alienwares website logo'd up with Dell but can't find it anywhere on the Dell website... glass surround exposed speakers... v. nice mmmmmmm

Sticking with a 790i board, it's only a £100 more he says!

I just don't know what to do with the graphics card yet... we shall soon see looking like the 9 series but it's a pain that something newer and better will come soon and the 9 series aint cheap yet...

i don't mind water cooling but know zero about it some I'm currently reading like mad...

whats the typical cost of a watercooled setup?

I have 2x Asus Extreme 8800GTX in SLi (SLi seems to bugger xfire every few minutes). The reason: I needed a new card and the GTX was the fastest then so bought it. Now its half the price due to impending 9 series so i got another.

Warning: SLi 8-series will cause you to have a CPU bottleneck (that's why i'm here to get mine faster).

Personally they reckon a couple months until the higher 9 series hit so i'd go for one of them then another when 10-series (or whatever hits). You won't have to worry about FPS with either generation playing most things. I play on UKCS servers and they are usually packed and 64 slot for #1 and 46 slot for #2 and I get 90fps regardless and as people die i can see over 200. CSS stress test @1650x1080 16x AA 16x AF i get 318.71fps. So the Q6600 and SLi 8-series ain't slow.

I have Striker Extreme 680i and haven't had a bad reason yet. Also why a 24" screen is that where you gold resolution usually hangs or are you after a big honking screen. I have a 22" asus monitor which has never failed to impress me. Asus MW221u is its name and it aint expensive considering current prices.

Guys and girl thinking of the 850W Be Quiet! Dark Power PRO PSU anythoughts?

Can't really wait for 9900 series... looks like it'll be the 9800 GX2

The build I've now settled on is as follows:

Intel Q9450

Asus Striker II Extreme 790i

9800GX2

2* Seagate Barracude 7200rpm SATA II 16mb Cache

Corsair TwinX 4GB XMS2 Dominator (4x1gb)

Soundblaster X-FI Platinum

CoolerMaster 832 Staker (Black)

LG GGW-H20L BluRay Drive

Vista 64Bit

850W Be Quiet! Dark Power PRO PSU

Monitor = Dell E248WFP TFT Monitor 24" 5ms 1000:1 Widescreen Silver/Black DVI - 3 Years Warranty

OR

Monitor = SAMSUNG SM245B 24" 16:10 LCD TFT with 5ms Response time, DVI, 1000:1 Contrast Ratio. 1920 x 1200

Both monitors are around £300

Any thoughts or suggestions on the build????????

Thanks guys

ps. cooling yet to be decided thinking air though still

Total Price = £1800-£2000 inc. VAT

Get a 2nd hand 88gtx and wait for the GT200 in the summer... nvidia deliver on time. Unless you want the gx2 for 3 months and then upgrade again? Or will you be happy with the gx2?

All my hardware is temporary lol

Nice build...

Actually, get a q6600 g0 rev. and clock the pants off it. The lower range 45nm quads are not good value

mmm well I was thinking the Q6600 route but I'm cooling with air not liquid... heard they get hoooot clocked

would save £100 though...

I'll hunt ebay for the 88GTX

I might be selling a GTX very soon - pm me if interested.

As for the mobo, how about an Asus P5k Premium/wifi AP?

Overclocks very well, custom pc's top mobo, and can be had for around £105 now.

If you're not going to go down the SLI route there's no point in paying the extra for the 790i.

If you're interested in peace and quiet I'd be a bit concerned about the GX2, as it produces a lot of heat.

The Be Quiet dark power psu's seem to be well reviewed.

p5k premium has lots of problems with sataII hdd. Only seagate drive work properly, had to buy a sata PCI card to get my samsung drive to work.

Why are the XFX and Asus versions of the 8800gtx cheaper than BFG, EVGA???

I can pick up an Asus for £190 ish whilst a BFG is more like £300 ish!!!

anyone able to give me a heads up on the above very close to ordering and the significant price difference is swaying me to the Asus GTX

Don't worry, sometimes companies have marked up ones as superclocked and such. Just grab the cheap XFX or Asus and you'll be fine :)

It's just the price companies have bought their stock at - the more expensive ones will be older stock, that's all.

If you're buying new, just go for the cheapest or the one with the best warrantee if they're the same price.

Second hand, I wouldn't worry too much about the make as long as the price is right (asus made all of the boards, as far as I know - other companies put their coolers etc on).

Just out of curiousity what would be better

Twin 8800GTS

Twin 8800GT

Single 8800GTX

Also if i were to go with an SLI'd setup can programs such as Adobe CS3 use take advantage of this or would a single card be the best option...?

And by the way all thanks for everyones input... depending on how much the car costs to fix I'll could well be ordering today build as it stands finally finalised is as follows:

Asus Striker II Formula 780i

Intel Q6600

4gb Corsair Dominator 1066mhz

2x250 Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm

Graphics tbc

Samsung 2232BW monitor

Thermaltake 650w PSU

Case Nzxt Lexa Blackline (Was going to be a Cosmos S but I can't justify the double price tag!)

to throw it into the mix what about a 9800GTX 512mb SC by EVGA £210...

decisions decisions!
