I am planning a new system build with the following spec below:

- Intel Q9450

- eVGA 132-CK-NF79-A1 nForce 790i Ultra SLi 3 Way SLI (Socket 775) DDR3 PCI-E ATX Motherboard

- Nvidia ????

- 4GB Corsair Dominator Ram

- 500GB Seagate Barracuda hardrive

plus the other usual peripherals

Any suggestions on whether to go for the 8 series or 9 series with this spec build?

Comments on the quality on the build would be appreciated i've strived for a good value to performance level

cheers guys and girls

Personally I would say 8xxx due to the looming next gen influx of cards. When they are released, 8 series cards should drop enough for you to comfortably afford a 2nd 8xxx and SLI them or sell up and upgrade to the by then (hopefully) improved 9xxx cards

I would suggest splitting the 500GB drive into several smaller ones too. Will cost more but when 500GB of data goes bye bye you'll know where im coming from.

Thanks for the info and a damn quick reply too... sensible thoughts raised about dataloss :o

okey dokey...

but the motherboard and processor = a good combo... ???

I'm wondering whether it's worth making the leap to an extreme qx?

I like your plan about a daul 8 series when they drop in price... 8800gtx or worth the cash for the Ultra with the build as it stands?

Nah i wouldnt adjust to a QX with the current price

I wouldnt get too excited about SLI, its not up to much at the moment with the current driver situation on vista. Might improve soon but that gamble is up to you, thats why i mentioned it may be best to move onto the hopefully improved 9 series cards. Unless the next gen cards will be in your price range.

As for the 8800, you might aswell go with the ultra if you can afford to even contemplate a QX9450 :p

tbh the 9800GTX is faster, the same price.. why not get that? The prices will fall rapidly when the next gen comes out as they are being discontinued...

So yeh imo get a 9800TX, they scale batter in SLI aswell.. better for your board.

I'd stick with something in the 8800 bracket (maybe a 9800GTX depending on price), Crysis aside theres not a lot of games out right now that will push it too hard. Far Cry 2 looks the next big game, but its such a long way off :(

End of October it's been put back to!

we'll see i just can't make my mind up!!!!

I suppose the question i was asking was the bang for buck commensurate to the increase in the buck required to get an extreme quad processorr!!!!!!!!!!!

just need to decide now if it's worth sticking in a bluray drive hmmm

I don't know, if I were going for a nice killer rig and wasn't too worried about budget, I'd probably go 9xxx series, 9800GTX preferably. Though the currect 8800 series runs almost all games really well. What resolution monitor will you be playing on?

Unless you're aiming for Tri-SLI I would kick the plans for 8800gtx-card, and get one, or maybe even two (like I did), of the improved 8800GTS, which features the G92-chipset. Or if you want to be a bigshot, go for the 9800gtx, and when the prices go down, or your budget goes up, buy another one.

As for the rest of the rig, looks pretty solid. :) What case, psu etc are you going for? And will you be watercooling it?

Monitor is yet to be decided... thinking of a 24" LCD it will be used for movies as well so trying to go as big as the budget allows...

D'u know i've never seriously looked into water cooling seems like an awful lot of effort to me... is it??

Thinking of the following:

Thermaltake DuOrb CPU cooler

NZXT Lexa blackline case (Not yet decided)

Be Quiet! 850W Dark Power PRO BQT P6-PRO-850W Modular PSU (looking for silence)

Any thoughts???

As far as I know the NZXT Lexa-case is poorly buildt with lots of cheap plastic, but I don't really know this for sure, I guess some of the other members can comment on this. As for watercooling, for a first timer I would maybe recommend an easy setup like the XSPC X2O-kit from Aqua-PCs.

I've never been too bothered about cases in the past but seeing as this is going in the bedroom, can you recommend anything else... sad i know but I quite liked the look of the Nvidia one when i was browsing their site...

water cooling... sounds like it could be a headache but i'll look into that kit... thermaltake Armor LCS could be an option???

the more i look at what started as a simply build the more i see the budget going out the window... £100 here another £200 there and before you know it eek!

Well with a 24" monitor you are going to want to go with a higher end GPU especially to make sure you can play games in the future. You could go 8800 now, and upgrade with the series after 9xxx or you could just go 9xxx now and figure out when to upgrade later.

Heh, I know what you mean, mate. I set my budget at £1000, but ended up using £1500. And I'll probably upgrade even more soon. I'm gonna build a new one as well, so my better half will stop nagging about not being able to run COD4. :P

tell me about it, the other half isn't informed of such important financial matters!

I've decided to drop in an EVGA GeForce 9800 GX2 "SSC Edition" 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express)

lotta money but hey...

the builds going to be £1500 I can tell... it's close to £1000 without the monitor... the way i look at it is I get a BluRay player, TV, Games console and PC rolled into one that will keep up for a year or two...

If only I could afford an extreme intel...

Well, finance isn't always a womans best area of expertise, if you get my drift. ;)

And you could always go Extreme later on. ;)
