GeForce 6600 GT 256MB

Vomit

New member
Hi, im looking for a new tempoary graphics card just to keep me going till i do eventually do a total upgrade of my system.

Basically just need anything better than the whats been to refered as 'a heap of junk' 5700LE that is in my case at the moment

was looking at the:

OcUK GeForce 6600 GT 256MB DDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (AGP)

"- 500MHz Core Clock Speed

- 256MB Fast Memory running at 900MHz"

on overclockers.co.uk for £105 including VAT... It struck me as a good deal... is it? or is there any alternatives i could get for about the same price.

If your willing to pay out just a little more then deffo get a 6800GS. They're about £20-30 more and about 20-30 times better

OK so thats an exaggeration but you get the point ;)

I went from a 5700LE to an X1600pro. Its not a half bad card, and cheaper than its nvidia counterparts. have a look at my review on this site.

Looked at a few benchmarks and there doesn't seem to be too much difference....

But ok the one i was just looking at is no longer on sale lol its now £111.. not much diff really but meh!

though BFG GeForce 6800 GS OC 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (AGP) is on sale now for £129 which i could go up to i guess!

the x1600 is there too £96... dunno which to go for! haha

Well, obviously it depends on how long from now you are going to totally revamp your comp. If the revamp is going to be soon, you might as well go for the cheapest one. If it's going to be some time from now, find reviews, compare, and pick best performance/price ratio

OKAY, NOW WHAT?

As you can see, these systems differ drastically in CPU/Memory frequencies but they both have the same video card. SYSTEM A IS TOP OF THE LINE STUFF. SYSTEM B CONSISTS OF PARTS THAT YOU CAN HARDLY FIND ANYMORE

SO WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

You're probably thinking SYSTEM A blows SYSTEM B away when gaming -- AND YOU'RE TOTALLY WRONG!

3DMARK2003 SCORES

SYSTEM A: 14158 Points

SYSTEM B: 12930 Points

3DMARK2005 SCORES

SYSTEM A: 7428 Points

SYSTEM B: 6009 Points

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

When gaming, your videocard primarily dictates how well the game will function, regardless of how fast or slow your computer is. Please, no ball busting (this is obviously not the case with AGP2X cards and what not). If you have too cards that are nearly identical in performance and you put one in a low end system and one in a high end system, you won't see much of a difference in games!

WHY BUY EXPENSIVE CPU'S, MOTHERBOARDS, AND MEMORY?

Here's a prime example, these two systems scored nearly identical scores in 3DMARK2003. What happens when they use CPU intensive programs? Let's take a look:

PIFAST SCORES:

SYSTEM A: 37.13 Sec

SYSTEM B: 54.95 Sec

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

If you're looking to do gaming or you're not doing anything CPU intensive, a system upgrade may not be a wise choice. I'm not saying upgrading won't help, it will but if you invested that money in a high end videocard as opposed to an entire new system, you will see a much bigger improvement in games, especially if you have to settle for a cheap videocard because the rest of the new system components burnt a hole in your wallet.

NOTE:

SLI will definetly improve your gaming experience. So if you're going to spend 500 dollars on a AGP videocard, it's useless when it comes to buy another one because SLI is PCI-X only. You have to determine what your present and future funds are going to be like before you spend a dime.

3DMARK2003 SCORE

SYSTEM A W/- SLI: 23055 Points

SYSTEM A W/O SLI: 14158 Points

BIG DIFFERENCE!

3DMARK2005 SCORES

SYSTEM A W/- SLI: 7428 Points

SYSTEM A W/O SLI: 10685 Points

BIG DIFFERENCE!

FINAL THOUGHT

Think long and hard about your intentions before spending any money because you might waste hundreds of dollars if you don't plan ahead carefully.

I hope this helps you.

Thanks... think ill go with the 6800gs, have only heard good things about it really from looking around.. and hey may mean i can put off upgrading my computer for a bit longer :P

Eugh.. overclockers.co.uk.. anyone had experience with them? ordered it but theyre asking me for bank statements/utility bills/driving lisence, its a hastle as i live in student halls..

Does anyone else in the uk stock the Thermalright V1 Ultra? dont want to deal with them if i can help it.

Thanks for the links, didn't know a couple of those. Several stock thermalright stuff but none of them seem to have the V1.. Guess they might be able to order one for me tho if they're already dealing with their distributor, will get on the email later.

Yeah overclockers.co.uk do indeed suck. cant order it to my halls address as pretty much everything of mine is registered to my home address... could get it sent there but im gonna think about it first. not sure if i want to give money to that company  lol

Well chillblast have got them available for preorder now following my email, so have gone for that and will have to hope a few other people do the same so i'm not waiting for ever :)

Come on guys, you know you all want one..

Yeh hey guys....im about to bu a 256 mb agp 6600gt video card, in australia for about $270 aus... i got 1gig of ram 3.01 ghz 800mhz front side bus and currently a 6200 256mb nvidia card... if i upgrade my video card will i be able to play need for speed most wanted on high grapichs and battle field 2 if its possible? and iv looked at the 6800gs but i couldnt find an agp one around $300 any advice orrr help wood b aprriecated.....

FYI: The 6600GT is a tad bit better than a ATI 9800PRO or a Nvidia Geforce 9950. If you don't believe me, scour tomshardware.net long enough and you'll see the review.

@lil_striker90

Save up abit more and get the 6800GS. Theyre worth the little extra and the performance increase you'll see will be worth the cash.

Also please try and use good english for your posts.
