GCSE results!!! w0o0o0oo

Do A Levels prepare you for Uni? No not really. M ine were good as my teachers made us fo everything ourselves so when I went to Uni I was prepared and knew how to research my own stuff etc. A lot of people at my Uni went to Grammar/private schools and got spoon fed so found it a rather large shock.

Anyhoo, well done to those who got GCSE's etc...even though they're p155 easy and aren't worth a thing after A Levels :p

All the coursework at both GCSE and A Level, I believe prepares you in many respects for uni.

As for "and aren't worth a thing after A Levels ", ironically GCSE's are more important than A Levels. When I went to Oxford it was a simple "Less than 8 A* at gcse, then dont apply"

At least for Oxford medicine, the reak down is...

GCSE's - 40%

BMAT - 40%

AS Levels - 10%

A2 Predictions - 10%

A level results will count for at least 50% mate

Definately 100000% not the case at oxford at least. I Have a whole booklet outlining how it works.... its basically ecause when most people apply they dont have their A2 Results.

do you have any idea how uni works bud?

sorry but I have just been through it all, ill give you "applying 101"

you apply by january of the year of entry, and they look at your subjects, predictions, personal statement etc and then give you an offer. This offer is the grades you need to achieve to go to the uni, so when results day comes in august, if you got the grades, you are in, if you didnt, then you probably arent in.

the facts you are trying to convey most probably apply to the fact that 95% of oxbridge applicants will get AAA in their A levels, and so they look back onto GCSE's and other qualifications to distinguish between everyone.

Sorry but you do seem to be very misinformed, but I will tell you this straight. If you don't get AAA at A2 level, you wont be going to oxford, and even if you do, its still not definate.

good luck with your application.

I can only speak for oxford because thats the only place I have been and talked one to one but their process is (for medicine)

Application must e submitted by mid september.

They look at GCSE/BMAT/AS. If you are good you get an interview, if not thats it. If you get an interview you get an offer which is based on A2 Results.

I.E Without good GCSE's you cant get through stage one of the process.

A Levels are a similar deal to GCSEs in terms of results. There are far too many As being produced. People with 3x As should get their foot in to top universities, but atm there are pupils getting 5x As. I have similar feelings to these as with GCSEs. Stop taking stuff out, stop providing informations at exam times, have coursework count for less (as most people will understand, even the dimmest student can submit great coursework, especially if she`s good looking..) - and start putting in harder stuff.

A levels were harder than the first years of uni imo. When I went to uni u felt the first year was a waster of time as u pretty much went over the stuff legitimately field experience qualified pupils had already done it in A level. Those with A levels in art, french or sociology of course would need a foot up in maths/computers - but nevertheless, u get an A level in 1980s music and u can do computing.

Freakin tax dodgers.

A Levels are bloody hard, but nothing compared to Uni 2nd and 3rd year...damn.

I don't think standards are going down, just people know they have to get better grades.

I know a few people in Admittance in Universities and GCSE's don't count for sh1t apart from "yeye he got all A's/A*'s. The good Uni's want well rounded students with awesome grades and a willingness to work hard. Basically Universities see GCSE's as a way to get to College and as long as results are pretty stable (no sudden D's etc), you're ok.

Good work Hyper - they'll get ya to College indeed :D Have a good one there too and steel yourself for A Level's ;)

Thanks Kemp, I have to go down on Wednesday to proove my results etc and get my student card. I am doing an I.T Practioner Level 3 course, sounds like the same one Mr Apoc is doing.
