Gaming Laptop

Well guys it looks like i'm going to be stuck in a hotel room in Alaska for 6 months. I need a decent gaming laptop, to maybe play some WoW, SC2...maybe some D3 or The old republic when it comes out. It makes me sick to have to spend money on a laptop, when I can build a way better desktop for the price, but if I don't have one i'll be going insane for 6 months. I don't want to check a buncha equipment like monitors, computer case, keyboard onto a plane. You understand. I would like to stay under $1000 if possible.

Heres what i've come up with so far :

I'm leaning towards the msi one at the bottom. I'm not too worried about the lower resolutions. It would be nice for 1080 but i wont die without it. Also a Dell Xps 15 is on my list. Most of the laptops i'm looking at have the Geforce gt 540, sort of wondering what the AMD equivalent would be. Thanks for any suggestions.

*Edit Here is an inexpensive Acer that has a mobility 6550 1gb gpu, core i5 480, 4gb of ram 1600x900....interesting.

Lol the would obliterate the budget. I like your thinking though. That acer at the bottom has the highest res and is cheapest. I just don't know how the AMD 6550 compares to the gt 540m.

Dude, if there is anyway possible to convince you to break budget by just a little, go for this.

and if you do not mind alienware

OH Diggy, that MSI Is great, I thought that was the one Tom reviewed. But his had the upgraded RAM and Dual harddrives in RAID...drool. I might consider this actually. I left everything as basic as I could through the customize option. It came out to...$1199. Not bad considering the XPS 15 I have ready to order is 1366x768 and I5, 4gb RAM, geforce 525 is $999. That msi is hot, and it comes with a free 8gb RAM upgrade. I wonder if it would have an empty harddrive bay if I wanted to upgrade to raid in the future.

NOW, the alienware I have considered before. I'm not sure about 14inch 1366x768 res though. I've never gamed on a 14 incher, and it comes out to $1199 also, or +75$ for the 1080p screen. So its actually MORE expensive than the msi. And it comes with less Ram. Either one would be a killer choice. That MSI looks like the money spot though.

At that price have you suggested one of the new C series Sony Vaios? They can be modified to an excellent configuration and they extremely trust worthy.

I think I answered his question already mate ;D and why on earth would he go for a Sony Vaio ween he could get a MSI G series XD

Acer's build quality is crap, go with the MSi

I know that's the accepted cliche, but if you're spending big, or on a premium model, I don't think its that bad.

I bought an Acer Ferrari One for about £400, not had a single spot of bother with it after 18 months, apart from one of the small rubber strips on the screen came off, which was easily put back with glue.

I bought my mum an Acer Timeline series laptop for about £550, she has had it for 6 months, no problem.

So maybe it applies to the cheap models, but I've certainly not had a bad experience with Acer

Actually the build quality of All Acers once you get down to the Nitty Gritty is very sloppy but, I can understand that your Ferrari Series would need to be well built, after all a Company has to be very careful in how they Present a sponsored build by someone like Ferrari.

But the Timeline one I got for my mother is not an exclusive brand, that's fine. Either you've had bad experiences in the past, or just bought the dirt cheap models, but imo from my experience in buying two in the last 18months, is that the build quality is fine.

Hmmmm your very lucky, I do not know how many times I have had to fix several of my friends Aspires which I told them not to buy but NOOOO nobody listens to the computer guy XD

I use an Acer Aspire 5740G and an Acer Aspire 5235. The build quality on both is absolutely fine. Never had a problem with any of my Acer Laptops. The 5740G is powerful as well, playing FSX with high settings no problem at all. Very smooth frames. I love the flat keyboards as well.

I would still go with the MSI though as it looks the dogs!!

I also have an acer aspire 5738z

I have now had it for just over 2 years now and use it every day for work/skype ect and not had one single problem with it, I often take it to and from college just in my bag (with no extra padding

). Ok so it has a few scratches here and there but nothing has broken or fallen off, so im extremely happy with my acer
