game virus? startup repair problem.

Hey guys,

I just bought a very old game, American Conquest: Divided Nation, second hand from Amazon. I have the first two American Conquest games and I know that they do not natively run on Windows 7, but I created a dmcr.BAT file to make them work (fixes coulours by disabling windows aero) on Windows 7.

Now, after I installed the game, I made a BAT file for it, because the colour issue in this game would still happen under Windows 7. I double clicked the dmcr file I created and my kaspersky went wild, telling me that this software publisher could not be verified and was risky (It came up in a bright red WARNING box). I had seen this before on software and they were ok, so i just ignored it. Then I got 3 boxes pop up at the same time telling me something about windows losing its drivers. Then another box popped up telling me to restart my computer, which I clicked to restart. I figured this was just the game telling me it wasn't ready to play until I restarted my PC, which a lot of old games used to do of course.

After I restarted, Windows refused to start, and I got an infinite loop of me restarting my PC and it going to startup repair, and subsequently telling me it was unable to boot to windows or repair problems. After a LONG night/early morning of messing around with the command prompt, I FINALLY got windows to boot, although I was almost sure my computer had been absolutely screwed. My Kaspersy told me that trojans had been found, and it fixed them. I told kaspersky to scan the game files on my hard drive and it said there were no threats detected. Same when I told it to scan the game CD.

Can anyone who is a bit more in tune with software and/or viruses shed some light on the situation? Was the game infected? Was it my .BAT file that did the damage?

I am scared crapless to try running it again, and I know that it is not worth messing my system up for. I only want to know the cause, if it is possible to tell. Any software experts out there please share your opinion! I don't want it happening again!

Sorry for my essay! Dan

Sounds like Kaspersky stopped it from running properly thinking it was a trojan/virus causing windows to crash, you need to tell Kaspersky to ignore the file and that it is trusted. Don't know how to do it though I don't have Kaspersky.

OK guys I had the guts to try it again!

First I added DN to kaspersyk's exclusion list.

On clicking the BAT. file to launch the game, I got the command window which closed windows explorer, just as i do o the other American conquest games which work. Then I got a grey box telling me I am protected and it asked me to reboot. Last time I clicked 'yes' but I left it this time, refusing to click anything until I copied down everything on the screen!

I got 3 windows popping up. Every window said:

"Windows requires a digitally signed driver.

A recently installed program tried to install an unsigned driver. This version of Windows requires all drivers to have a valid digital signiature. The driver is unavailable and the program that uses this driver might not work correctly.

Uninstall the program or device that uses this driver and check the publisher's support website to get a digitally signed driver"

Then each box had some different material at the bottom:

Box 1

Driver: StarForce Protection Ewnvironment Driver

Service: StarForce Protection Environment Driver (version 1.x)

Box 2

Driver: StarForce Protection Helper Driver

Service: StarFroce Protection Helper Driver (version 2.x)

Box 3

Driver: StarForce Protection synchronization Driver

Service: StarForce Protection Synchronization Driver (version 2.x)"

Then whilst I was copying that all down to put on here, I got another box popping up saying "StarForce Copy protection fatal error" When this popped up, the box telling me to reboot my computer disappeared. After I closed down these boxes, my computer returned to the normal desktop.

What do you think?

If you're running x64 Windows, press F8 at the boot screen and select the "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" option, should work then?
