G92 8800gts 512mb Tested!

Well I'll be cancelling my 8800GT order now. I don't think there will ever be an EVGA GT models gracing our shores.

On the EVGA step-up, last time I looked into it, it looked like terrible value in this country, where it would be much easier and cheaper to ebay the card and just get a new one. Has any one been through a step-up here ? But curently I do have an evga sticker on my case and will buy another based on the warranty mostly :)

Think people need to be careful overly comparing these cards and being too compaicent.

For sure, each new card that comes out, there is an expectation of it being the best out at that moment in time.

But you need to take careful notice of the price scale these things get released at. King of the hill, imo of course, are the previous gen 8800 GTX/Ultras - but look at the price they still command - and the newer released cards are £100/$150 below, @ MRSP. To me this is a direct indicator of the manuf/nVidias expectations.

Ok, u can burst in here and mention that "xyz card performs just under the 8800 gts 640 or gtx", but they are "next gen" even tho they`re not tagged with the 9800 name tag.

Way I look at it, these base gts 512 G92 cards are gonna perform at around the par of the current "new" 8800GT cards clocked at the higher end of the scale. The likes of the XFX 670mhz+ cards. Once the new GTS has been around for a while and higher clocked ones come out, they`ll obviously perform that much better. Then a variant of the GTX will come out and be that much better again.

As opposed to a 9xxxx range of cards coming out soon, I see the 8800 GT/GTS and eventual GTX?, coming out in relacement of the older 8800GTS320/640/GTX768/Ultra -- almost like a revision of the 8800 range and the G80 generation falling away from the shelves.

It`s not until u see a card similarly priced, mrsp-wize, as high as the GTXs were, that u`ll see a giant step up in performance. And before this time, u`ll take big notice that £100/$150 price drop in the old GTXs - that`ll be the cue that something big is coming.

These G9 cards of course have some stepup in drivers to come also.

I think u shouldn`t buy an old 8800GTS, then 8800GT, then the new 8800GTS and be upset that they`re not massively outperforming each other.

Rast, i THINK your saying exactly what my take on this is.

To cut it short. If you have one of these cards (old GTS, GT, New GTS), its not worth upgrading as they're just revisions of the same thing.

The real next gen will be a much larger hop in performance, which will be reflected in the price.

Basicly what your saying?

Same patten as with the 5900 -> 6800 -> 7800 ->8800 over the last what? 4/5 years?

More or less spot on, wouldn`t be me tho if there wasn`t some waffle thrown in there :p

EDIT: weeeeeeeeeeee edit button !! - Although I would add if u`r buying from the 7xxx range, it`s blindly obvious u should go for the G9 based cards as they`re good atm and will tweak more with driver improvements.

I think i'll still buy the new 8800GTS, only because I prolly won't be able to afford the next gen :p

If u`re upgrading right this minute from a X1300, then I don`t think u`re gonna be upset with ur choice. Pricewize and in comparison to what u had.

Just think those with current 8800s should be aware what they`re doing when they think of buying them. Smaller improvements per costing.

And if I had an `older` GTX/Ultra, I`d still be sat back w8ing to see what else comes out.

Same pattern as I've gone, except the 7800 was an 7900. It is pretty much my annual upgrade, each time to a reasonable value for money replacement. As they're completely clueless as to when they'll be getting in the GT's I figuire I may as well wait 'til after christmas and exams before I get a new distraction :)

I was talking about the original releases rather than what people bought ;). 7900 was just a shrunk 7800, and subsequently faster clock.

Well it is worth it if you can do it for next to nothing.. I had the ol 320mb GTS and flogged it on Ebay for £160 and bought my GT for £165... Then sold CoH that came with it for £17 so made a profit and gained quite a bit more preformance.

Just re-read that article and it appears to me after reading the paragraph a few times that the 8800GT they tested it against was a 600mhz version, unless I`m very much mistaken.

Certainly doesn`t moisen my groinal area if I`ve got a 670mhz 8800GT.

Was thinking last night how a 8800GT would perform with an original 8800GTS/GTX/Ultra type cooler on it, and cranked accordingly, and I think the new GTS is possibly the answer to just that.

So an overclocked 8800gt would possibly beat the pants off it or equally match it? Has anyone got a 8800gt underwater and oc'ed? Does oc'ing void the EVGA steupup program?

I doubt it. Is everyone forgetting that the new GTS can be put under water and OC'd too? Has more SP's and once official drivers come out I reckon performance will be better.

Not interested myself. Like Ham said if you have an old GTS or a GT already you won't notice any performance increase - other than 3dm06 I saw no marked improvement at all.

Re. oc'in - pass, hit up evga's website and read the T&C's mofo. I'd do it anyway and deny all knowledge. I'm pretty positive thay can't tell you have used software to oc.

Roll on Feb :)

Looking at the situation as a whole I would say that NVidia are releasing these cards on a newer process to A. Save money and B. Test out the new process for the next gen cards. They really are not pushing these as performance upgrades since they are using the same numbers (8800) and lower or equal suffixes.
