G80 aka GeForce 8800 Release Date

Still going for a hard launch, but surely this will restrict supply, allowing the price to climb ever higher.

Only for those that want it now I guess - history shows us if we wait the price will fall ;)

Haha yes, prices of most electrical items do fall over time, especially in computers where the rate of change of the technology is perhaps larger than most, and in the slightly longer term the supply restriction that might be imposed by this minor mishap will be overcome and the price will fall.

I have just seen the story posted on several sites, and the Nvidia line along with it of saying it will not affect anything, as the release date and hard launch are staying, but was suggesting that there is still likely to be an effect, i.e. an upwards nudge on the price. The size of the effect i wouldnt like to guess without number of cards affected, along with the cost of shipping them about and fixing the resistor and how much Nvidia controls the price of the cards themselves.

From what I've heard, ~ 1/4 of cards are affected. Depending on how the cards are distributed it should be fairly easy for them to work out which manufacturers have cards which are defective and which don't.

Those board partners making their own cards may well not have any issues at all. Might well be that we see these cards hit the market first (at inflated prices???) and the "defective" models released back into circulation a little later.

Thats insane! but I love it....hope these suckers drop soon. Would love to pair these to a kentsfield!!!!!! *dreaming*

Kentsfield only really comes into it's own when the programs (in this instance games or benchmarks) are multi-thread (able to access more than one core) optimised - of all the games that are around right now, how many are optimised this way, at the last count I thought it ws only Quake 4 and 3dmark 06.

What makes Conroe so good is that it has better architecture and a 4MB cache that, when not being used in multi thread (shared amongst two operating cores) actually gives all 4MB cache for single thread applications to access.

Kentsfield is in fact 2 conroe core on one chip. So I would expect in real world games (and most benchies except 3dm06 and cinebench) that kentsfield is no faster in 99% of all available games today.

The real improvement will come when we move to proper quad core (all four cores on one wafer) with a real 8mb cache to share - this is targetted at a 2008 launch - iirc K8L is 2cores on one chip also?

I was also reading that writing code for dual or quad core cpus is incredibly difficult (read as time consuming and expensive) therefore there are certain thresholds that have to be surpassed before such programs become mainstream.

Now having said all that Nvidia have taken the law into their own hands when it comes to this issue and have released drivers that have some multi core optimisations, this only produces a small boost, but when benching a boost is a boost :)

It's like directx10 - how long will we have to wait before DX10 games are mainstream? I think we will be looking at a xmas 2007 launch for the majority.

What the G80 or 8800GTS does, is bring SLI speeds to a single card user - isnt that what we have all be crying out for? I doubt we all want it becase it directx10 ready, the real directx 10 cards will be next years G90 when all the optimisations are completed.

Of course Vista is round the corner, but really, who cares? Sure it has some nice touches, it also has some bad ones, including the dreaded DRM and other big brother enhancements nobody wants except the multi-billion dollar businesses who clearly do not make enough money as it is - and of course Intel who get a constant money off every company that uses DRM (license fees) to ensure that DRM is updated regulary.

It's been a while since I posted - clearly I had a lot more to say than I originally anticipated.

:)

for me this is the best news ever we have cpu that love the cold and now a gpu that is not cold bug

kp said he has had the cards @-80

Had an email from Nvidia today (typical newsletterthing, nothing exlusive) which states:

Join us Saturday, November 11, 2006

The NVIDIA Reality Tour will showcase the latest jaw-droppingly powerful, incredibly true-to-life PC gaming solution at a retailer near you on November 11, 2006.

You can experience first-hand NVIDIA's next-generation PC gaming platform at a store near you. Compete in head-to-head mini tournaments, win NVIDIA prizes, and talk to NVIDIA representatives. Learn more about the Reality Tour and locations near you

Which strongly suggests to me that this (albeit a Saturday) will be the launch date of the G80 - which will be known as the Geforce 8800.

It would appear to be most excellent for me - I see my son on Saturdays, he lives about 2mile away from there - so I might go there first and then run off to spend my time with him :D

Heh heh wise order...family will be the only thing to pull you away from nvidia reps and gear :D

Remember to ask them lots of awkward questions!
